When planning our wedding, we set out to create an event that was uniquely us, to share with the people that meant the most to us, making certain our personal touch was evident throughout. We wanted a different look, and we both purchased and carefully selected all of our attire. We had nine groomsmen, with only two bridesmaids. To add to the organic look of our day, the men wore their own suits of varying shades of gray and the women wore a faint blue. We love to travel and enjoy unique places in the world, so our venue had to be just as unique. We wanted to be away from home but not too far, so we decided on a not so destination, destination wedding with our venue about an hour’s drive from home. Google Maps got us started, allowing us to zero in on wedding venues in our area of interest, ultimately leading us to The Garrison; the first place we saw. It was love at first sight and Todd Smith was amazing to work with.

Everything fell into place once we decided on the venue. We wanted vendors that knew the venue, and through Todd we found our photographers, our officiant, floral designers, hotel and our transportation. Photography was a top priority. We feel it’s the one thing from this special day that lasts throughout a marriage, and we knew we needed to find equally special people who related to us, whose work was timeless, that we could appreciate through a lifetime. We found this in Ulysses and Jenni of Ulysses Photography. They were the first and only photographers we met with, but the moment we saw their work and met them, we knew they had to be the ones to memorialize our big day. They certainly lived up to that challenge. Food is a very important part of our relationship and we didn’t want it to be typical banquet hall fare, it had to be special, and The Garrison didn’t disappoint.

We designed, detailed and made anything we could ourselves, from our save-the-date postcards, place cards, table name cards, guestbook and favors, to the words we carefully chose for our invitation. We wanted to add some whimsy, so we included “be there with bells on” to our RSVP cards. Our matron of honor then surprised us after the ceremony by having our guests ring bells that she made with popsicle sticks and jingle bells. We wanted to incorporate our travels, so as place cards we used luggage tags tied with brightly colored ribbons. These lead to tables named for special places we visited together. Each table card was a picture of us at the location with a story unique to our experiences there. Extending the travel theme and incorporating our love affair for photography, our guestbook was a basket of postcards we made from scenic photographs we took throughout our travels. Our last love, music, tied the entire day together with a husband and wife violinist and trumpeter duo playing our favorite classical pieces for the ceremony and cocktail hour, and a DJ for the reception, ensuring we had music from all corners of the world incorporating american pop, hip hop, reggae, bachata, salsa, merengue, soca and various indian music. We started the night with Bob Marley for our first dance and ended with Bob for the last dance. For our favors, our guests were treated with delicious homemade jams of different flavors such as apple rhubarb, caramel apple, spiced pear and jalapeƱo strawberry that we made and packaged ourselves. It was truly a special and magical day.
