Wedding Wednesdays are all about delivering the pretty inspiration, so it makes perfect sense that we are starting things off with a backyard affair that kicks DIYing up a notch with an entire list of gorgeous details styled by the beautiful bride, dapper groom and awesome family and friends. Think science-themed centerpieces, a yummy Italian meal and lush succulent-filled bouquets and you are on the right track. And did I mention that the entire day took place on the bride’s family farm and was captured in amazing images by Katie Stoops Photography? Hello, inspiration fest. See so much more right here.
From the Bride… As soon we we were engaged, we knew we wanted to get married at our family farmhouse in the old fishing village of Reedville, VA. The old farmhouse, located right on the water, is just about the most peaceful place I know! Since the outdoor setting was undeniably gorgeous, we decided to cross our fingers and hope for the best for a beautiful rain-free day! And we were so lucky to have the most gorgeous wedding day. We were married under a giant oak tree, overlooking the water, in front of our wonderful friends and family! It was truly an amazing day! The colors are so vibrant in the spring; it’s the perfect place for a fun, intimate wedding. We decided to use sunshine yellow and gray as our color palette, since we knew the colors would really pop in the luscious and flowering backyard. I wanted my bridesmaids to express their personalities, so the only guidelines I gave them were “something yellow or gray”. It was really great to see it all come together at the wedding. I loved the brightness of the colors and the way everyone lit up. They looked gorgeous! The groomsmen weren’t too shabby either!
We knew we wanted to handle as many of the details as possible: my dad cooked a delicious Italian dinner, we DIYed the table arrangements and decorations, the groom’s brother performed the ceremony, my best friend made the wedding cake, etc. It truly was a wedding for the people, by the people. One of my favorite touches was the vintage stained glass church window that my parents hung from the tree right above the arbor where we were married. So lovely! My favorite moment of the night was cutting the cake! Everyone gathered around us, while we played “Sweet Caroline,” and they all sang. (Red Sox style for all you Bostonians!) It was so much fun to share that moment with everyone. Not only did the cake look awesome, but it also tasted amazing: lemon cake with lemon curd and an amazing frosting. It was bright and elegant, just like the wedding! Tilman is an avid cyclist, so our cake topper was “his and her bikes,” which was really sweet.
Tilman and I are both scientists and we knew we wanted to include some cute science elements in the wedding. Our seating chart was the periodic table, our flowers were in beakers and flasks, and we served our signature drinks in beakers (which also doubled as the favors.) Katie Stoops from Katie Stoops Photography photographed the wedding and she did the most amazing job! I knew when I saw her blog that I had to have her document the wedding. We actually picked our wedding date based on when she was available! She really knows how to make everyone and everything look stunning. I love to look through the pictures and remember all of the loveliness from that day. Our family and friends made it one of the best days ever and we enjoyed every minute of it!
