From the Bride… My husband and I are outdoorsy people. We started dating when we were both camp counselors and continued to share our love for the outdoors all through our relationship. Our favourite camping spot is at Waskesiu Lake in the Prince Albert National Park which is a few hours north of our home. So it was a fitting choice to have Elk Ridge Resort as our venue within the Park. We were both enamored by the gorgeous pond terrace surrounded by evergreens and lush forest. Being from the prairies, it was like having our own little destination wedding close to home.

When I began planning my wedding I knew that I wanted it to be colourful, whimsical, sacred and a little bit crafty. I spent hours upon hours hand-creating and designing favours, banners, invitations, cupcake flags, table runners, seating boards, stamps etc. We made small pinback buttons, half of which had cutesy patterns and half of which had 2-toned pastel pictures of my husbands favorite sports players. Every once and a while we still see the buttons pinned to a friend’s jacket or bag and it is so fun to catch a little glimpse of our wedding in unexpected places. I took true joy in creating all the little pieces that would be unique to us as a couple.

The day of the wedding it rained for 1 hour, and of course it had to be just as the ceremony started. All my plans and ideas of what the ceremony was supposed to look like were dashed. As I was about to walk down the aisle I remember looking out at all my hard work becoming soaked and thinking ‘Well, this wasn’t in the plan, however, I’m about to get married to the man I love. What could possibly be more wonderful?’. It gave me a rare opportunity to affirm that getting married isn’t about the production but the act of marriage itself. Looking back, there was something so soft, sacred and real about getting married in the rain that I would have never anticipated. One of my favourite moments was during the reception dance. My strips of fabric that served as table runners were suddenly being pulled off the tables and used as headbands or belts or rhythmic dance ribbons! Once again I realized that some of the best moments you can’t possibly plan for. I am so grateful to have had Emma Love as our photographer who gave me constant inspiration during the planning process. It has been a joy to see our wedding through her eyes.
