From freshdesign… Engaged at Big Bay Park, on one of Glendale, Wisconsin’s secluded lakeside beaches, Emily and Justin knew they wanted their wedding day to reflect their unique style. Drawing inspiration from Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil, Emily and Justin sought to create an event that was warm, inviting, and timelessly romantic. “[We] wanted the day to seem very vintage, but not kitschy. Just spectacularly classic…with lots of candlelight.”
Completed in 1929, the University Club of Milwaukee is steeped in the rich tradition and details of its time. With such lavish architectural elements as a backdrop, Emily and Justin focused on texture, candlelight, simplicity, and purposeful diversity in design to tell their story. When asked what drew them to the venue, Emily noted, “I loved that it was unlike any other venue; a nontraditional choice for an otherwise traditional wedding. It is such an elegant space and completely spoke for itself; the chandeliers, the art, the dark wood, classic. [We] took one look at the room and knew instantly that was where we were supposed to get married.”
From the seersucker suits and the Swiss dot ties to the period inspired gown, their event had an heirloom quality without feeling dated. Pairing old with new, Emily and Justin chose a varied and diverse floral palette to add an ethereal botanical element. Tufts of moss, dense greenery, and pearls of amaranthus all played a part in creating that mystical garden feel. To keep things fresh, each bridesmaid carried a different bouquet in a complimentary hue while some unexpected varietals, namely thistle, took center stage in the boutonnieres.
During cocktail hour, guests were greeted by a moss encrusted monogram on the place card table, while in the dining area, understated botanical clusters and ample candlelight graced the tables. The cake was deliciously simple, 4 tiers of textured butter cream topped with a traditional bride and groom statuette.
At the stroke of midnight, not a single detail had been left to chance. Perfectly planned to compliment the easy-going elegance and eclectic aesthetic of a care-free couple, Emily and Justin created an unforgettable affair. An affair that captivated guests and carried them to a time not so long gone in a place of enchanted beauty. When asked to recall the most memorable elements of their special day, Emily noted, “The small, special, quiet moments with my family and my new husband. The kind of moments that if I wasn’t paying attention, would be forgotten, but live on in my heart and soul as the most important parts of the day.”
