Job Posting: Graphic Designer Needed!

October 31st. 2011 by Abby Larson | Filed Under | 18 comments

Hey guys. We hope you are having a blast getting all dolled up for Halloween! Such a great time to put down the wedding binders and do something completely crazy. If you can believe it, here in Wayland, Mass…Halloween was actually canceled due to a Winter storm that has left us without power for two days. Telling a three year old that trick-or-treating is a no go…now THAT is spooky!

We wanted to take this down time with real weddings on SMP to let you all know that we’re currently looking for an awesome graphic designer to join our team full time. There are so many cool things happening at SMP but we need someone who can help ensure that each and every element of SMP is pretty, usable and designed to perfection. Full details are below but we ask that only those in the Boston area and have access to transportation apply.

Job Description

We are looking for a skilled graphic designer who understands color schemes, color contrast, typography, spacing, proportions, composition, and visual hierarchies. The right candidate should share our love of all things pretty and all things usable. We don’t emphasize one over the other so it’s important that we find design who places value on both aesthetics and functionality. The position is a full time, salaried position in the Boston area.  Salary will be based upon experience.

Requirements

Significant Experience with Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop
Passion for Design AND Usability
Knowledge of HTML5 + CSS
Experience in User Interface Design a bonus
Knowledge of Responsive Web Design is a bonus

To Apply

Please email a resume, very brief email introducing yourself and describing your skill set as well as providing a link to your online portfolio to jobs{at}stylemepretty{dot}com. Please no portfolio attachments (send links to online portfolios).

    hi smp -

graphic designers usually aren't trained in usability or interaction design and almost never in front end development.

you may want to retitle your job description or you're going to have a tough time finding the right fit.

    good luck on your search!

    Hi meg,

I kind of, sort of agree with you. We could have put out a call for UI designers or web designers but we hastily chose to put out a call for graphic designers. Honestly, I think the position calls for a little bit of all three. Web designer might be most abstract but appropriate of the three terms. However, I worry about the vast array of different types of candidates we'd get if we asked for web designers. Lots of people think of web designers as HTML developers. A strictly HTML/CSS still set is exactly not what we're looking for. Practically speaking, we need people who can work in Illustrator and have a design background. I'll tweak the skill set above to reflect that.

  4. Sarah says:

    Hi Tait,
Would you consider a work from home candidate? I would LOVE to have this job, and I think I'm very well qualified, but located in Philadelphia.
    Thanks!
    Sarah

  5. Cindy says:

I've been a freelancer in RI for 20 years...curious about your response to Sarah. Thanks!

  6. I'm very interested as well, but am located in Greensboro, NC. I'm a full time graphic designer who specializes in both print and web. I also have had clients in the bridal and usability industries, so my experience working with them will be very helpful with this job description.

  7. Tait Larson says:

Proximity to the Boston area will be a factor in our decision but go ahead and apply either way. The right candidate will work closely with our developers and writers. Face to face meetings are always easier but online meeting work too.

All our employees work from home and go into our office outside of Boston for meetings anywhere from a couple of times a week to once a month.

Cindy, RI might be fine as long as you are willing to make the occasional drive up to 95 for meetings.

  8. Elle STeiner says:

I am a graphic designer and website designer based in Boston. I did the package design for a company called 'Fresh' before I started my own business, doing print and web design. A year and a half ago I took on a full-time position at Brigham and Women's Hospital as a Senior Web designer (so I haven't update my own website in awhile, oops!). But I'm interested in the position. Do you have a salary range set for this job?

    Elle

  9. Tait Larson says:

Salary will be based on experience. If you are extremely talented and we can utilize your skills you'll be well compensated.

  10. I wish I lived in Boston {but then sunny warm South Carolina does have its perks}! I'm a Wordpress theme developer and graphic designer. If you ever need some satellite help, I'd love to work with you! :-)

  11. Allie says:

Exciting! I live and work as a Senior graphic designer/art director in Boston, and this sound amazing! I've been a fan since I got engaged and haven't let go of SMP blog & twitter updates since!

I'll pull everything together and send this weekend!

  12. Hello,

    Chezelle

  14. Sarah says:

Hey guys! I'm guessing this job isn't open to international applicants? Sounds like a brilliant opportunity though!!
