Monte Verde Inn Wedding from Blooms by Martha Andrews

No bride spends her days wishing, hoping, and praying that it will rain on her wedding day. But, Mother Nature doesn’t always consult the couple for her big day plans. Lucky for brides everywhere, we believe that rainy weddings not only bring good luck to the bride and groom, but make for an extremely warm and intimate affair. An ambiance that just can’t be emulated without a little water from the sky. Example: this California wedding at the Monte Verde Inn was supposed to take place outside in the gardens, but rain changed those plans. And what would have been a beautiful wedding was magically transformed into, what we believe, a even more extraordinary affair. Captured by Stout Photography, flora’ed by Blooms by Martha Andrews, this wedding was beyond romantic. Click here for more.

Alex and Clarissa met while they were Peace Corps Volunteers in Tanzania. For two years they lived as site mates in the foothills of Kilimanjaro. Alex taught computer training at a teachers college and Clarissa taught biology at a secondary school in a small village up the hill from Alex. Every Wednesday, Clarissa would walk the hour down the hill to Alex’s site so she could get fresh vegetables and fruit at the market. Alex would meet her and they would sit on a bench and have a soda before she hiked back up the hill. Alex started coming up to her site to fix the broken down computers her school had locked in a back room. Six months into their service they were in love.

Since they fell in love in the foothills of a mountain, they chose to have their wedding in the foothills of the mountain range overshadowing their new home in Sacramento. Monte Verde Inn is a stately Georgian Manor nestled in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada mountain range. The couple planned for a spring garden wedding and loved the outside gardens and ring of trees under which they would be married. They were thrown a huge curve ball when Clarissa and her bridesmaids arrived the morning of the wedding to see snow dusting the gardens! The people at Monte Verde were amazing and smoothly transitioned the entire wedding inside complete with candles lighting up the  ceremony space.  In the end it made for a completely different, but amazingly intimate and romantic wedding.

Clarissa and Alex wanted their wedding to be a reflection of their personal styles: Alex is simple and classic while Clarissa is elegantly earthy. Clarissa and Alex chose their colors and inspiration for the wedding when Clarissa’s sisters fell in love with a tissue taffeta bridesmaid dress by Bill Levkoft in Glacier. Her mother made all the paper cones for the chairs and the string balls that hung in the windows. She also sewed the ring bearer pillow, bow-tie and flower sashes and for the children.  The wedding favors were small jars of flavored salt, in theme with the salt ceremony Clarissa and Alex performed. Clarissa and her mom planted lemon thyme in their gardens so they could have enough of the herb to make the lemon thyme salt. They made vanilla salt with vanilla beans Clarissa and Alex had brought back from Zanzibar as they were leaving Tanzania. Clarissa wanted a part of her new home with Alex in the wedding, so Martha incorporated flowers from Clarissa’s garden into the bouquets.

Sadly, Clarissa’s maternal grandmother passed away while she was planning the wedding. To keep her memory and spirit alive during the wedding Clarissa wore earrings and a simple pearl necklace that belonged to her grandmother. This inspired much of the pearl theme throughout the wedding. She bought her bridesmaids drop pearl necklaces from Brighton and Martha added pearl embellishments to the bride’s flowers. Angela Dal Bon tied it all in with a pearl border around the place cards which matched the wedding invitation.

Too great! I love the flowers

  2. Jill says:

I attended a wedding at the Monte Verde Inn several years ago. Such a great location, and the staff is wonderful!

  3. martha says:

Clarissa is such a sweet person. I know many of us would have stressed out if our wedding was "rained out" But Clarrisa was grace under fire. She really knew it was about the marriage, not about a wedding. Such a wonderful soul, and in the end it was still a beautiful wedding, she lit up the room!

  4. Amy Shuman says:

This is lovely! I saw this on the Stout Photography blog, and love how this wedding coordinated! Love all the use of the beautiful stationary as well.

  5. Cassie says:

Love this wedding! Would you mind sharing where the card box is from? It's beautiful!

  6. Mallory says:

Hi Cassie! Isn't this wedding great? We're checking on the card box for you.

  7. Clarissa says:

    Hi Cassie,

The card box belonged to my Grandmother. It's really an old hat box where we hot glued the top askew to collect the cards (afterwards we peeled off the hot glue no problem!). It matched our colors so well and I liked to have so much of my grandma there!

  8. Clarissa says:

It's so fun to look at this post. It reminds me of what a wonderful day it was :)

  9. Jacob says:

Great story! Love the favors. The invitation designer is awesome!

  10. I'm so glad I got to be a part of this wedding! Clarissa and Alex were such a pleasure to work with. They were very involved with the design process from beginning (invitation design) to end (place cards, seating chart, programs, etc.). The outcome was so much better because of their input!

  11. Michelle says:

Love the stationery in these photos!

  12. Gerard says:

the photographer has captured such stunning detail of a beautiful day :)

  13. Karyn says:

Oh gosh oh gosh! Where is the diamond ring from (with the 's' shaped grooves for the diamonds to sit in)? It's absolutely amazingly gorgeous. Does anybody know where that might be from?

  14. Mallory says:

Hi Karyn. Isn't that ring absolutely great? We're checking on your source for you now!

  15. Mallory says:

Hi Karyn - we've got the info from the bride: "The ring is actually from the Shane Co. I'm training to be a midwife and I needed something that wouldn't scratch other people :) I think it may technically be considered an anniversary or wedding band." Hope this helps!

  16. Karyn says:

OH MY GOSH thank you SO MUCH! This is one of the single most beautiful rings I've ever seen! Thank you Mallory for finding out and thank YOU Clarissa for sharing this gorgeous piece of jewellery and its source with us all (but especially me, of course)! Seriously, I sigh in reverence over this ring.

    Thanks again ladies!

  17. Mallory says:

I'm so glad we could help Karyn!

  18. Tanya says:

Where are the tuxedo's from or how did they match the tux's color's to the Bill Levkoff dresses in Glacier?

  19. Mallory says:

Hi Tanya! Let me check with the bride on those tuxedos. I'll let you know what I hear!

  20. Mallory says:

@Tanya, here is what the bride had to say: "The suits were from Men's Wearhouse and we just got lucky that they matched! When we ordered the dresses we bought extra material in the same dye lot so my mother could make something should we be unable to find matching ties/bowties."

    Hope this helps!
