We are back with the second stop on the Kestrin and Jonathan love train and it just so happens to be their radical reception at Flora Grubb Gardens. These two know how to think way outside of the wedding box and their festivities reside in a land where funky meets gorgeous. Noa of Feather Love Photography completely blew it out of the water with this one. From the getting ready shots to the flag-filled ceremony, we are squealing with sheer delight. This is heart melting, out of this world kind of love stuff and lucky for us there is a huge gallery of pictures to pour over.

The reception was held at Flora Grubb Gardens in San Francisco, an exquisite plant and tree store run by Jonathan’s older sister. While the beach ceremony was meant to feel quiet and intimate, the reception was meant to feel monumental. The guests stood shoulder-to-shoulder in a covered outdoor area. Each guest was given a yellow or saffron colored flag that Kestrin made in the weeks before the wedding.  They created an aisle through the crowd, holding the flags aloft like a giant game of London Bridges. “A few weeks before we got married I had a wedding dream where the couple flew up into the air when they kissed and I went on a mission to make that happen for us.” The flying rig from a trapeze company turned out to be uninsurable but they managed to capture the feeling of flight. The couple stood on a “spinny platform” that began turning slowly while they read their vows and by the time they kissed they were spinning at a dizzying speed above a sea of waving flags.

The couple is non-religious so they looked to science and music to find inspiration and greater meaning for their ceremony. They read thoughts on the universe and love by Carl Sagan, Stephen Hawking, Douglas Adams, Mark Twain, Buddha, and The Beatles and combined the words and concepts into a few paragraphs that were read by friends and family at the ceremony and reception. Here is a snippet from the vows the couple read to each other:

Jonathan: I vow to love you

Kestrin: I vow to love you

J: to be your best friend ever

K: to constantly generate a force field of awesome to guide and protect us

J: to live as long as possible

K: to live a charmed life

J: to take you on one hundred honeymoons

K: to rock out with our great grandchildren

K: Do you vow to be my husband?

J: I do. Do you vow to be my wife?

K: I do.

There was a make-your-own grilled cheese sandwich station, a photo booth, a pedal powered ferris wheel, a dada peepshow (where a whole cast of performers put on a show for two people at a time), a tiny tea party, a dance floor, and a karaoke lounge. As usual, the karaoke stage was the last thing standing at 4:00 am.

“I strongly recommend any bride (or couple) with a clear vision to do exactly what they want to do and deviate from the plan as much as necessary in the 11th hour. All of my favorite interactive and simple elements came to me in my dreams (literally) just days before our wedding. If you want to spin in the air surrounded by your loved ones, it’s completely possible.”

Congrats on a unique and beautiful wedding Kestrin and Jonathan and a HUGE thank you to Noa for capturing such an amazing wedding AND letting us share! Be sure to check out the Feather Love blog for even more fabulous images from the day.

  1. Brittney says:

Is that Adrian Grenier (from Entourage) in one of the pictures? :)
On another note...what a fabulous party! Love the lighting with the bright colors.

  2. Emilia says:

"If you want to spin in the air surrounded by your loved ones, it’s completely possible.” Well, possible if you have thousands of extra dollars in your budget! This is beyond, beyond, beyond gorgeous but, unlike yesterday's wedding, COMPLETELY unattainable for most people. Well...for me anyway! It is the wedding of my dreams but, unfortunately, that is where it has to stay!

  3. Leigh Anne says:

I absolutely love everything about this wedding. From the air plants to the green dress to the venue and photography. So happy to see a non-anthro and more garden-like wedding. A favorite by far! Oh if I had to do it all over again....*sigh*

  4. Leigh Anne says:

p.s. diggin' the crimped hair too!

  5. Shyla says:

What a beautiful bride! Love her hair! Was that the Entourage guy?!

  6. Jessica says:

I love the use of air-plants throughout the entire wedding! What a great way to incorporate greenery without the fear of it wilting or dying!

  7. Kate says:

If Adrien Grenier was in attendance at this wedding I'm not sure how practical (or affordable) a wedding like this would be.

  8. Katrina Lynn says:

It is my life long dream to throw a shindig comparable to this one! OMFG what brilliance!!!!

  9. kestrin says:

hi ladies! i just wanted to let you guys know some budgeting stuff about our wedding, since i'm a total indie producer and a cheap-ass. here is how we got away with that party for cheap:

    1. i bought all the booze at costco myself, and our friends helped bar-tend
    2. our venue was free, thanks to a blood relative. we got REALLY lucky, places like that run by the hour & it ain't cheap
    3. our friends DJ'ed and did all the professional music (i'm a musician, so am also lucky that way)
    4. we didn't serve dinner, just snacks (check out www.peasantpies.com to get a sense of pricing)
    5. the spinning platform was built by our good friend, in addition to all the extra entertainment: tiny tea party, succulent teacups, karaoke, coffee, etc. which was donated by our network of brilliant creative friends.
    7. i was the primary wedding producer (as opposed to an expensive professional event company). i worked with the venue managers at both locations, who were invaluable, but there was no big company doing this.

the pebble beach dinner was the most expensive part, which my mom insisted on, so she got it.

the primary costs of the party were:
-costco booze, wedding cake (we got way too much, you should under-order per your head-count). everything else we really worked our network of brilliant friends and everyone threw in their time and energy to help. it was mostly a feat of organization. don't doubt your ability to pull off impossible things! sometimes being strapped for cash makes it way better!

  10. thanks for the great feature! this wedding was a total blast to capture, not to mention completely visually stunning!

yes, that's adrian grenier (entourage) who is the couple's friend & neighbor. kestrin and him have worked together before as well.

also, kestrin thanks for adding some really great tips! i generally find that creative people who know lots of other creative people who are willing to help- can create lots of magical things. what was most impressive and overwhelming about this wedding was it's heart & soul. Srsly. I imagine if it did end up being a picnic as you initially planned Kestrin, it would have had the exact same feeling to it. it was the people, the creative hands, and the love that blew my mind- besides all the other incredible and fun things going on... the entire thing was brilliant! bravo for letting your dreams and ideas soar & figuring out how to make them happen! xo

  11. Amazing no doubt, but I wonder the same as Katie, how practical or affordable can this be?

  12. Jasper says:

AWESOME WEDDING!!! lovin' the green dress and hair, and that you saw George Lucas the day before? Omen for sure!
Your tips were great, finding inspiration from your dreams and trying to execute that...perfect.

And I agree on having friends and free venues helps a ton with cost. We're using our backyard, a great band my dad drums for, baker, bartender, and brewery manager friends, auntie-owned candy shop treats, flower and arrangement donations (my husband and his sister have both done flowers), and trader joes wine. We're easily saving ten grand!

  13. kestrin says:

@jasper thank you! i wanted the party to look like a million bucks and cost under 10K :) it totally worked! n

we used trader joe's prosecco, too! i wish i could see the auntie candy shop treats, that sounds awesome!

  14. Emilia says:

Thanks for sharing those tips, Kestrin. Sometimes seeing these gorgeous weddings can be a little daunting and discouraging so it is nice to hear about all your cost cutting ideas. And I lurve the Trader Joe's Prosecco. MAN that stuff is good!

  15. Mitomaid says:

My FAVORITE wedding SMP has ever featured. What a delight -- such an expression of the couple's individuality and love (regardless of cost). Bravo. I am so inspired! Thank you and best wishes for a magical future together.

  16. Sarah says:

I agree with Russ and katie, its incredable but she had 2 days of wedding festivities, 300 guests and 3 dresses! How is that possible to stay under 10k?

  17. Niki says:

Beautiful and unique wedding! Any chance I can get more info on the "make-your-own grilled cheese sandwich station"? I love that and would love to know more about how you did it!! Thanks!

  18. Whitney says:

This wedding is awesome. I only hope that my wedding will be as much of an expression of my fiance and I as a couple as this was for Kestrin & Jonathan. Congratulations!!

  19. Love that green dress!!!!

  20. Suzi Q says:

Every time I go to San Fran I think, why didn't Flora Grubb Gardens exist when I lived there? And wouldn't this be a sensational place to phtoograph a wedding? It's got just the coolest, styling vibe, so I hope they decide to open it up to many more weddings. Beautiful stuff!

  21. Shauna A says:

I just cannot get over this wedding. Its thoughtful, quirky, beautiful, stylish... everything. The ceremony in nature was stunning, intimate, + romantic, but then the party is rocking. I think its hard to get the best of both worlds, but this couple really managed to pull it off. Such great inspiration... :)

  22. Kelly A says:

I love the vows, they made me cry(:

  23. Such cool photos. This couple was made for your work!!:)

  24. IckleMe PickleMe says:

I think this is probably the most beautiful and fantastical wedding/celebration that i have EVER seen. It really really is, i am absolutely green with envy...and doesn't even have anything to do with the green dress changes. seriously amazing stuff. i know that a lot of you are fairly floored by the budget being $10,000 but i have to say that the amazing venue (which was free for them!) and the amazing photography i think really add to the richness of how this wedding and the party come across....not to mention the fact that the couple are just absolutely radiating with love and light and warmth and youth and excitement. the whole thing just looks amazing. i know for a fact that when kestrin says that her friends helped contribute much of their creative talents and works, that it is something that definately happens like that. i lived in a really wonderfully artistic, anarchist, musical, magical little community in West Philadelphia and i know another couple like this who got married and for the whole year before the wedding, one of their best friends who makes stained glass, created about 10 large pieces just for them...which would have probably run $40-50,000 if someone had purchased them, and they would never have been available for rentals.....another friend of theirs, who is another artist, hand painted each of the invitations and did the calligraphy for free (as their wedding present!) and the vegan cafe that they went to all the time offered to do the catering for just the price of the food itself, no extra fees. it was beautiful, and amazing, and SOOO creative....a lot like this. they also had a small reception following the wedding with a lot of the family there (about 40 ppl) and then the next night they had a HUGE party for all their friends and neighbors, they had all their friends bands playing and they bought some kegs and Trade Joe wine and that's what everyone drank and they made it a pot-luck-dinner occasion. it was wonderful...

so anyway, as i was trying to say, it seems really hard to believe that their ceremony and reception cost that little because it looks SOOOO amazing, but creativity, great lighting, great photography, and beautiful statuesque people can add instant wealth to any occasion... but i agree, that total cannot possibly include the dresses. maybe i'm wrong, but those are 3 REALLY great dresses and you just do not find dresses like that in the LA area for super cheap.

i think this is my favorite wedding that i have ever seen, and i even love the back story to it. i love it when great love stories happen to great lovers... now i'm just waiting for it to happen to me!!!! good luck guys!!! and btw, this was some of the best photography that i have ever seen.in my life.

  25. Lucy Joy says:

Kestrin where oh where are your lovely earrings you wore with your wedding dress (number one :) from? they are exactly what i'd love to wear for my wedding in 6 weeks!!

Your wedding looks MAGICAL! like the ball room party in Labyrinth! wow. i love all of the pictures!

We have lots of musican and creative friends so like you are going to use them all for our day very soon! Seeing you in your amazing vintage style dresses has made me want a red tulle one for our evening party so much!! I love your crimped hair too!

I wish you both lots of happiness :) xx

  26. This union is doomed to fail.
