Texas Wedding with Modern Flair

April 28th. 2010 by Erin | Filed Under | 41 comments

What is yellow, grey and modern all over? Why Rachel and Eric’s Houston wedding of course and it is about as cute as they come. Shot by Paperdolls Photography, this affair was bright and shiny despite the clouds over head and the Grove at Discovery Green Park proved to be the perfect venue for that modern feel. The bridesmaids donned yellow sweaters and a few of the groomsmen did as well. Fab knitwear + a wedding= a match made in heaven. Want to see more of this happy, happy day? We are a modern couple so we knew the moment we started planning that we wanted a modern wedding. The only problem was finding a modern venue. Houston has gorgeous country clubs and venues but not quite what we had in mind. Then, we found the Grove at Discovery Green Park and it was perfect! Discovery Green is a 12-acre park located in downtown Houston. The trees, lakes and sculptures throughout are stunning. The Grove is a restaurant located within the park and its modern architecture and style was exactly what we wanted for our wedding. Needless to say, we were thrilled to have a venue and began the planning.

My engagement ring, an asscher cut, was my first inspiration. I fell in love with the shape so I knew I wanted to include octagons in some of the details and I was pleasantly surprised when I was able to use it in so much. My favorite pieces were the cake and my sash, which was a vintage rhinestone appliqué that my mom hand stitched to a satin sash. The sash inspired me to do other diy projects, so I made my bridesmaids’ necklaces. I wanted a chunky, romantic statement necklace and they turned out to be exactly that. The girls looked fabulous in their gray J Crew dresses, yellow Express cardigans and necklaces designed and handmade by me.

Our wedding day came and so did the rain, which made it a hectic day with lots of last minute changes. The ceremony originally was planned for outside underneath a grand oak tree but Mother Nature had other plans. We quickly had to spring plan B into action and with the help of my great vendors and lovely friends, we pulled it off. Our ceremony was on the rooftop of the Grove and was nothing short of absolutely perfect!

After the ceremony, the guests moved to the dining room, which included my favorite details. I loved the lampshades on the tall floral arrangements, especially the gray satin ribbon that my bridal party and I added so they would pop just a little more. And, my absolute favorite detail was the dessert table that included my cake, French macaroons, white chocolate truffles, pretzels, almonds, and candy bars. I love Amy Atlas’ dessert tables so we recreated a table inspired by her. The desserts looked delectable and tasted delicious! Guests filled pastry boxes with all these yummies for the take away. At the end of the night, our guests sent us off with sparklers into a vintage car owned by my fiancé’s step dad. The groomsmen had decorated it with cans and ribbons and a fabulous “just married” signed designed by a good friend. The night was filled with laughter and tears, dancing and good times. Our day was so incredibly special, not only because of all the great details but because of the love from family and friends!

How sweet! The Grove is my favorite Houston restaurant, and my fiancé Steven just recently proposed a few weeks ago at the Grove on April 3! They worked with him to make it EXTRA special, so I'm sure they were very helpful with the wedding. Anyway, I loved seeing these photos of a wedding there!

Such a pretty wedding! I love the yellow and grey together - feels really crisp and fresh. I know the dress is Mori Lee but does anyone know an exact style number on it? I love the lines on it - it's just gorgeous!

  16. Kat Ward says:

Great wedding - I love how classic and simple it is, while also packing a lot of PUNCH! Well done. Okay, so this is a logistical question, but it looks like they have 10 people at a 60" round. My venues says we can do that (which will mean squeezing in those extra few important people) but I was hesitant to put that many people at a table. Although seeing it here, is looks like it works. Any thoughts on this? I want my guests to be comfy, but I also really want that last group of super important people! THANK YOU!

  17. love this color palette!

  18. Brianna says:

I love love love this. My parent's colors 26 years ago were pink and gray and I love the yellow and gray combo! I have been considering it for my own colors, but wasn't sure how it would feel until I saw this. I also love those bridesmaid necklaces and would love to know how you made them! I'm doing as much DIY as possible to save money!

  19. shiri says:

  22. Lexi says:

YAY for bridesmaids cardigans! I've been imagining it in my mind for my wedding for so long and I'm overjoyed to see it so beautifully executed by somebody else first! Gives me just the confidence I need to force the issue with nay-sayers.

  23. Karl says:

I was there, IT WAS AWSOME. Rachel worked long and hard on everything, and as you can see from the pictures everything turned out beautifully, even with the rain. Everybody had a great time, Its to bad that when the day arrives it seems to go by so quickly. Thank goodness for a great photographer. Rachel and Eric make a great couple. I must say that Rachel looked absolutly stunning, and I'm not just saying that because she's my stepdaughter. I think she should go into the wedding design business

  24. Rachel says:

Thank you for all the great comments! I'm going to try to answer all of your questions. The ties are from Express and the tuxes are Calvin Klein rented from Mens Wearhouse. The necklaces were a very long process, because I hand strung every strand. I bought the beads and supplies at Michael's and found the clasps online. There were 8 strands total and the girls twisted then when they put them on, so it can be worn 2 different ways.

  25. Emily L. says:

Is it just me or is the bride Kate Hudson? That wedding is so lovely.

  26. I love me some gray and yellow!!

  27. Marie says:

Rachel- your hair is EXACTLY what I've been trying to find a picture of for my wedding in May! Any chance I could get Tara Harris' contact info? I'm still looking for someone to do my hair :) Thanks!

  28. Laurel G says:

Donna of Paper Dolls Photography does a great job! She did my engagements, and boudoir pics! This looks like a really fun wedding!

  29. Tanya says:

I love the cardigans for the bridesmaids!

  30. Marli says:

To Kat - I am a wedding coordinator who comes from a catering background. We used to put 10 people at a 5' rounds all of the time. One of the main things to look at is your chairs. If you have chivari/ballroom chairs or folding chairs you should be cozy but fine. Sometimes hotels or venues have a little bit larger chairs and that's where it gets tougher.

    Happy wedding!

  31. Rachel says:
