From Inspiration to Reality: The Design, III

January 22nd. 2010 by Abby Larson | Filed Under | 21 comments

Some of you might not know this, I definitely didn’t when I started SMP, that photoshoots like these are actually pretty common for photographers and event designers. Often they are held as workshops to teach up and comers how to shoot weddings and details. Other times they are done to build portfolios and provide a creative outlet for the vendors involved. So for us, it seemed only natural to get our readers involved.

And today’s From Inspiration to Reality was put together by some of the Bay Areas most talented peeps. Jessamyn Harris, Jess Flood, Flair Bridesmaids, Fleur DeLisa to name a few (full vendor and resource list below). So they are totally to thank for turning Emilie’s board into pure bliss. And inspiring us to no end.

So a HUGE thank you to all of the vendors involved. This was an incredible adventure, an incredibly inspiring day on SMP. One that will definitely be a favorite from now until forever.

I know that shoots like this aren't uncommon, but I'm still not a fan of the inspiration to reality features. They feel incredibly wasteful to me. Invitations that are never sent. Flowers that are never smelled. Cakes that are never eaten. I much prefer real weddings, even if they aren't as picture perfect. What makes weddings so special is the underlying emotion. You just can't manufacture that.

  2. Mouse says:

    Kacey has a point.

But I just want to roll around in that amazing moss all day.

  3. Abby Larson says:

Yep, I can totally see how you might think that. The thing is, SMP is all about inspiration, so it's giving brides solid ideas that they can translate into their own wedding. And since it's the vendors that have all of the genius tucked into their imaginations, it seems like such a good thing to us. When you work with a bride, you don't always get that creative freedom that you want, as you need to stick with certain styles and tastes. So for the artists, letting them have a total blast with creativity, it's so valuable. And for the brides to find the perfect details, it's awesome.

Plus, we are strong supporters of small businesses which is another bonus of the new feature. The cake designer that gets an order from the spread, the invitations that will actually bring in money to the person that designed them. It's SO important to us to support small businesses and this just seems like a really cool way. Plus, I think they are SO cool.

But I do think you are right that you can't manufacture emotion. There is nothing that quite compares to a real wedding.

I see the point made by Kacey also, but I have to say this is beautiful, memorable and inspiring for me (engaged to be engaged). I love real weddings too, but sometimes one doesn't want to take what someone has already done and seeks inspiration to imagine their own moments. I find the inspiration to reality whimsical and inviting. consider my creative juices flowing. thanks for sharing!

  5. Aylee Bits says:

I agree with Kacey. But I also want to say... GORGEOUS. The ceremony location is beautiful!

  6. I do love real weddings, and am glad you guys do too. I can't wait until the season picks up again and we have lots of beautiful summer weddings to share! But to me it's unrealistic to expect a wedding style blog like SMP to only feature real weddings alone, since it's not a photojournalism blog. To my mind, it's the same as any lifestyle magazine shoot (where the shots are almost always manufactured completely), or many wedding magazine features for that matter - but SMP's slant is much more interesting because it is interactive, based on a reader's creative board. I don't love looking through wedding mags' fashion spreads most of the time because they are so similar - dress, dress, dress, jewelry, dress - but the ItoR features I've seen on SMP so far are each very unique. I love how they showcase each vendors' creative process and even regional locales, and unique point of views. I know that, for us, it was a chance to do something we all sit around daydreaming about, that we might not have the chance to do at a real wedding. It is so awesome to have a challenge to come up with something from scratch! I've already had one of my 2010 brides email to talk about how much she loved the shoot, and I know she is looking for a vintagey feel to her wedding photography as well - so I think that we are all on the right track here.

I don't think it's any different from any other small business's marketing and promotion - in the same way a graphic designer might create pieces for her portfolio without an actual client, or that I sometimes do shoots just for myself and to share with potential clients, we are creating something that showcases our skills and ideas in an unlimited way. And there was very little "waste" on the shoot... in fact we tried to stick to a limited amount of "fuss" to let the colors, light, and dreamy feel of the board and shoot shine. The amount of paper goods printed were the amount you see, all clothing was loaned so it can still be sold or otherwise used, we kept the florals to a limited amount so that we didn't have to waste anything... to me it never would come up as a question of authenticity... far better to create something unique but created than to pretend we shot a wedding that didn't exist!

Besides... who says the cakes are never eaten?! ; )

  7. We dug into our fabulous cake as soon as the shoot was over!! Yum!

Love Nicole Miller. Would've loved to see some shot of the "bride" without the fur. But I do love the overall mood created here. Nicely done. Thanks for sharing.

  9. April says:

The photos are simply incredible. My favorite is the shot of the bouquet on the ground covered with green moss. Unspeakably beautiful!!! Love the details in this wedding, quite lovely!

  10. That bouquet, those plates, the location! This is seriously just perfect! Just gorgeous.

  11. Daisy says:

Love...Love....Love this wedding! So beautiful! Also, I wanted to let you know how much I love coming to your blog...it's just so gorgeous and filled with so much inspiration!

  12. bridal know says:

Love the photo shoot. Although as what you have said, they may be common already, but still, they look amazingly beautiful.

  13. The inspiration is real, and you can see that a lot of love went into this shoot, and a lot of love came out of it - and continues to.

  14. beautiful cake presentation, and centerpieces. Such a soft color palette. We truly love this.

  15. I must say that the pics are really awesome. I like the cake with a wilderness background. So innocent so pure. Lovely blog post.

  16. Tara says:

This is exactly what color palette I was hoping to see highlighted. I love it! I'm getting married pretty much in the middle of the woods at an inn at a state park and I think using moss would be really beautiful. So thanks.

  17. Crystal says:

I love this muted color palette. And the moss, my goodness how I adore moss!
There is such a natural elegance about this shoot. One of my favorites so far.

  18. Jess says:

Gorgeous-- I love the moss green and ceremony location. So soft and pretty!

  19. Mary Kate Raffetto says:

Ummm.....I love that distressed wood cake riser! It is exactly what i'm looking for!!!!! SMP, if for some reason you do read comments, where did you find it? I would love to know. Thanks!

  20. Meredith says:

The riser that we used is an old wooden fruit crate turned upside down. It shouldn't be too hard for you to find one at a local antique store, flea market or on eBay.

  21. mary langley says:

What is the moss between the flowers on the cake made of.
