I am mad for this next holiday DIY project sent to us by the always talented duo at Hello! Lucky. They’ve partnered up with stylist extraordinaire, Shana Faust, to create a project is all yumminess. And the very best part is that you can change up the letters and make the most adorable wedding favors EVER. We heart BOTH Hello! Lucky and Shana Faust a lot and are tickled pink that they would put together such a keeper…plus they included printable templates so that your designs will look just as perfect as theirs!

This holiday gift entails making your own cookie cutters out of a favorite font or shape. We used the letters J-O-Y in Cottonwood . We added cute packaging, including a note to the recipient on the back. This idea can easily be adapted to personalized wedding favors, by using your initials, or any simple shape (a leaf, flower, horse shoe, clover….the list goes on!<.em>

Time needed: 6-8 hours (including cookie cutters, cookies and packaging) / Makes 20 packages

Materials:

1 roll 6 in. aluminum siding (available from Home Depot)
A printout of your letters or design
20 cello bags (we used 4 in. x 9 1/2 in.)
30 sheets 8 1/2 x 11 in cardstock
Extra frosting or gum paste

Tools:

Color inkjet printer
Newsprint or newspaper to cover your work surface
String (optional)
Tin snips
Gardening or utility gloves
Wire cutter
Metal file
Double sided tape, or super glue
2 small clamps per cookie cutter
Copper tape, such as Ambrand’s Slug & Snail Copper Tape (Optional)
Craft knife
Cutting mat
Ruler
Bone folder
1/8 in. hole punch
4 yards 1/8 in. ribbon
Scissors

1. Print your design. Print out your design or letters. Use the print settings on your computer to scale the artwork up or down to a size that will fit nicely into your cello bags.

2. Make your cookie cutters. Using string or a length of your ribbon, follow the outline of your shape to measure the length of aluminum you will need. Add 1 in., 2 in. if there are many small details. Wearing gloves, use tin snips to cut a 1-in.-wide strip of aluminum to the length required. File the edges with your metal file. Shape the strip using tin snips, allowing a 1/2-in. overlap where the ends join. When you are happy with the result, overlap and seal the open ends with double-sided tape or super glue. Secure in place with two clamps and let dry. If you are in a hurry, you can also seal the join by wrapping copper tape around it; copper tape is sturdy and will not break along the edges of the cutter.

3. Bake and frost your cookies. Use your favorite recipe to bake and frost the cookies. We used the Gingerbread Snowflakes recipe from Epicurious.com and the coordinating Decorating Icing recipe. For best results, use a pastry brush to brush the frosting on.

4. Package your cookies. Customize and print the backing card (we made a 2-sided backing, with a decorative pattern on one side, and a holiday message on the reverse), and the folded top card. Cut each card out using a craft knife, ruler and cutting mat. Score and fold the top cards with a ruler and bone folder. Using a dab of frosting or gum paste on the back of each cookie, arrange the cookies and affix them to the backing card. Insert the card into the cello bag. Fold the top card over the bag opening and punch two holes, about 1 in. apart, through the top card and bag. Thread an 8-in. length of ribbon through holes from front to back, tie in a bow, and trim the ends with scissors.

Hee hee! How smart to use gum paste to stick the cookie on the packaging paper! LOVE IT!!! What a way to present cookies!

  4. Lex Cut says:

I'm going to analyze this better later. It looks cute! I could make letters out of my name with this instead!

  5. Rebecca says:

Has anyone succeeded in finding the aluminum siding mentioned in the instructions? I think what is described is actually aluminum flashing, thin but bendable strips of aluminum which come in rolls that are 6" x 50" or so. That's the closest thing I've found...

  6. I really like and appreciate your blog post. Really Great.
