Max Wanger is kind of a celebrity in the blog world. His blissfully dreamy photographs are beloved by bloggers and brides alike so when I saw his name in my inbox, my heart did a little flutter. And the wedding he sent didn’t disappoint. The bride actually read SMP every day…so if we had even a tiny hand in the gorgeousness of this wedding, well…it’s a proud day indeed!

My dress is by Claire Pettibone, and pink-studded shoes by Pedro Garcia. Jeff wore a dark grey glenplaid suit from Zara, paired with a Hugo Boss tie and shoes from Kenneth Cole. The bridesmaids each wore a different gray dress fit to their own style. The groomsmen wore gray Alfani suits with coordinating striped ties. We loved that the Smog Shoppe was eco-friendly and wanted to contribute to the green venue in some way. My gown was locally made and constructed of unbleached cotton.

Beth Helmstetter introduced us to the Smog Shoppe and we immediately knew it was the spot for us. Jeff was drawn to its urban design and I loved all the eclectic elements. With a design background and an obsession with wedding blogs (with SMP as one of my faves!), I couldn’t wait to start the design process.
The ceremony was decorated with an assortment of blue and white china which came from a collection of sources including a family friends backyard. Our floral designer, Holly of Holly Flora, adorned the event space with an organic mix of ivory flowers. We raided the flea markets and scored several items including the crown cake topper, my bohemian headpiece and the travel case that served as a card box.

We ditched the idea of a traditional sit-down meal, and served dinner cocktail style – tray-passed miniature delectables by Bite Catering. Our awesome bartender, Kasey of Luscious Libations created our signature drink, named I Effen Love You (made of Effen black cherry flavored vodka). Our deliciously adorable wedding cake (of cupcakes!) was made by our friend, Stefani at Skye Cakes.

Beautiful wedding - but I don't get how it was DIY.
The bride made pretty much all of the details with the exception of the flowers...all of the paper goods, the photography spread, the fans. She collected all of the details from flea markets and from antique stores. Definitely a DIY inspired affair!
Love this- those cupcakes are so adorable!
I love! I love! I love!!!!
What a fun wedding! Where did you purchase those matches and blue straws?
Such an adorable wedding! DIY but stylish and hippie chic~
What a beautiful bride!! I love pretty much everything the Max Wanger shoots :)
...but she says she hired an event planner. i'm confused.
Hi Alison- I was very hands on with the design and opt to find many decor pieces on my own to save cost and also to make sure it was reflective of our style. Beth was a great mentor throughout the design process as I constantly bounced ideas off of her. She also managed the overall event and made sure it was executed smoothly on a production/logistics level. Hope that makes sense!
To answer the first comment, the papergoods were all DIY including the personalized matchboxes. We also had a dessert display/table that was all DIY (with the exception of our wedding cake). I purchased many items from thrift stores and flea markets.
Tracey- the matchboxes were purchased from the supermarket and I wrapped them in recycled kraft paper and designed/printed the front and back images. We purchased the straws from www.kikkerlandshop.com. hope that helps!
Max Wanger is one of my favorite photographers! His work is exquisite! And this wedding, well... pure perfection. When i think i have seen it all SMP surprises me! Congratulations to this amazing bride! Her work is gorgeous! All the best to the newlyweds.
that dress is so beautiful!
Beautiful wedding! I first saw his work on A $10000 Wedding. This is a kind of random question, but does anyone know where I could find those blue and white striped straws?? Adorable and the perfect colors to add to my wedding stuff!
Love this wedding! Elaine, would your bridesmaids be willing to share where they found their dresses? I'm asking my ladies to wear shades of blue or gray. Thanks... and congrats!
Elaine- would you be willing to post or have Abby post the directions to the DIY matches?
sigh. max wanger never fails! and the calligraphy details are gorgeous and the long bridesmaid dress is beautiful~
Hi Nicole - sure! From left to right: Madison Marcus dress via Shopbop, J Crew, American Rag via Shopbop, Banana Republic. I've noticed a lot more grey dresses this fall/winter as Grey and Purple really made a come back! There was a grey drought earlier this year when we were looking for suitable dresses!
You can find the straws
at Urbanic Paper in Venice!
To further clarify on the DIY question, most of my clients hire me to do everything for them either because they have no idea where to start or because they want a beautiful wedding but don't have the time to really think about things like how the napkins are folded and where to find the perfect vintage cake topper. While Elaine and I did work closely together and I gave her guidance as well as worked with the vendors, she very much enjoyed the planning and design process and decided to shop and secure many of the pieces shown on her own. She was scouring flea markets and online resources so she could make sure everything met her exact vision as well as her budget. I was there for her behind the scenes and hooked her up with some great vendors but I can't take credit for the overall design concept on this event!
So pretty and whimsical. I love her gown and head-dress!
Totally my style. Gorgeous couple. I LOVE IT!
simply beautiful!
Oh, Elaine, this was such a gorgeous wedding! Lucky You. I love the long bridesmaid dress, any idea where she got it? thanks.
Hi Brie! Thank you! The long dress is from J Crew, you should be able to find it on jcrew.com
Beautiful wedding and I love that the couple infused their personal styles. LOVE Max Wanger!
I'm curious how much this DIY wedding cost them, although it's impolite to ask ;)
Hi,
where did the head dress come from? I am getting married May 1st and am also wearing Clair Pettibone. Gorgeous wedding!
Hi Bridal Betty - Without disclosing our total wedding cost, I will tell you that our DIY efforts did help us save money although we did splurge on other things like photography, an event planner, my dress! :).. and we also had around 150 guests. Because we did splurge in other areas it was important for me to incorporate DIY projects where I could apply them so our cost wouldn't get out of control!
Angie- the headpiece is actually a vintage necklace I found at a flea market! I added a necklace extender to the back and my hair stylist pinned it into my curls. you can get pretty creative with headpieces without having to spend hundreds of dollars! My stylist also suggested buying some faux pearls (From a craft or party store) and pinning strands of pearls into my hair. hope these suggestions help!
Elaine - I just wanted to say what a wonderful wedding...really beautiful in such a soft understated way. You have also inspired me to go for it with the handwritten invitations Ive been mulling over for weeks...why not use your own skills when you can? Im getting married in Surry in England this coming August and I cant wait!
Thanks for this inspiring wedding.

Lovely wedding. May I ask what the fee was for using the Smog Shoppe?
Hi Natalie - congrats on your upcoming wedding! good luck on your invitations!
Jasmine - I would check with Sherry over at Smog Shoppe (www.smogshoppe.com) as the rate varies depending on guest count and probably also day of the week for your wedding. thanks!
Elaine,
I am planning on having my bridesmaids wear gray dresses of their choosing. I was wondering what guidance you gave them as to color to ensure that they were of a similar shade of gray?
Huge thanks in advance.
Hi Heather! good question because greys are SO tricky! honestly, i was very hands on with this process as I often looked for grey dresses and would send my BM the links and let them choose from there. luckily, the greys turned out very well. My sister's one shoulder dress was actually more of a sage/grey with some green tones in the grey but as a group it worked fine with the rest of the dresses.
If you are having trouble with this, you can always give your BM swatches of greys you prefer or even pass out some paint chip colors from your local home depot. But whether it's cool or warm greys... as a collection they still look very pretty together! good luck!
where in the world did you find your shoes?! They're sooooooooo awesome!
Hi Rachel! I first spotted them in a Vogue-Spain issue and later tracked them down on footlux.com. thanks! :)
Any chance you want to sell your dress?! :)
