Virginia Beach Wedding by Steve DeVries

I really heart today’s first wedding. There is just something so simple and clean about the style…something that screams elegance and yet it still has that perfect infusion of rustic charm that we all love so much on SMP. Photographed by Steve DeVries, I am pretty sure that this was an incredibly special day.

The wedding took place in Virgina Beach at an old family fame. The couple went with a palette built completely out of neutrals…bamboo chairs, queen anne’s lace, crisp white linens. Everything was understated and yet everything was perfectly designed. And what I love the most is that Steve, the photographer behind the day, allowed the natural elegance to dictate the tone and style of his photographs so that through his images we feel like we are right there, celebrating with the gorgeous couple.

I am kind of madly in love with the casual vibe of the wedding. From the men’s khaki suits and leather flip flops to the family style dinner that they served with their nearest and dearest creating such a warm, intimate ambiance. Love, love, love this wedding…it’s so refreshing, so completely lovely.

Thank you so very much to Steve DeVries for sending us this little piece of heaven!!

The scream heard round the world came through the phone when I called up my wife and told her our wedding was on stylemepretty's front page.. Admittedly I don't know much (anything) about wedding blogs, but my sister called threatening to throttle me if I didn't tell Mariah (my wife) that instant about this sensational news. And so I did. And lots more screaming. Lots.

Abby - I don't know much about it except that it was the best day of my life, that the sandals were my idea, and that every other shred of credit goes directly to my wife. Thanks so much for the encouragement.

Andrew, groom, newlywed, happiest man on earth

Ummm...could be the CUTEST. COMMENT. EVER.

  3. Lauren says:

    Pretty much... Great pics.

  4. I LOVE hearing from the Groom! Very sweet. Love the cool relaxed vibe of the whole thing. I think the boys look awesome! Also, love the wicker chairs such a nice texture to the outdoor venue.

  5. Eddye says:

Awww... what a great way to start the day! Congrats Mariah & Andrew! Gorgeous, gorgeous wedding!!

  6. Shelley says:

Mariah has the best scream in the entire world. This wedding really was so beautiful and so fun!! It was perfect!!!!

  7. Erin says:

You wouldn't know this from the photographs exclusively, but the couple had a choir made up of about 15 or so friends who sang a capella for communion and the recessional. It was so fresh and fun and meaningful. There was also a performance from an unexpected Gospel choir at the reception - a little surprise gift from the bride to the groom and the rest of the guests. A total win. It was unlike any wedding I have ever attended. Does this bride work free lance?

  8. Katherine says:

Does anyone know the designer of the dress?? LOVE!

  9. ariel says:

I agree with you katherine I love it to!

  10. Angel says:

Love love love it!! What a terrific groom! And khakis and flip flops!? Way to go!! Kudos to the bride!!

  11. Robin says:

I too would love to know the dress details. It's a gorgeous gown that goes perfectly with the casual vibe of the wedding while still looking elegant and stunning -- exactly what I'd like in a gown :-)

  12. Micha says:

This wedding is what I imagine the "budget" version from yesterdays wedding to look like (with the one type of flower, clean white palette) but I think this wedding is much more beautiful. This wedding looks sweet, romantic, and genuine.

PS. This wedding doesn't look budget at all, I was just commenting that it reminded me of the wedding yesterday that Abby gave tips on how to make it budget friendly.

  13. Mariah says:

Thanks so much for all of the wonderful comments on our wedding! The dress was designed by Romona Keveza. I believe she has a website you can check out.

  14. Hillary says:

where are the bridesmaid dresses from? i can barely tell what they look like, but what i can see i love!

  15. Rachel says:

When I saw these pictures, I absolutely fell in love with this wedding, but my favorite part is the tables.

Then I scrolled down and saw that it's on a family farm in VIRGINIA BEACH. Where I live! It's absolutely gorgeous.

    And yeah, groom's comment...so sweet. :)

  16. Mariah says:

I found the bridesmaid dresses at the Gap which is somewhat of a miracle since I hadn't been into a Gap since 1997. The best part of the bridesmaid dresses were the pockets!

  17. Rachel says:

Ok, now I know exactly where it is! I can't believe this wedding was at Sajo Farm. I never in a million years would have guessed that place. I went to school right near there. I guess it just goes to show, you really can turn any location into something amazingly beautiful!

  18. amanda says:

i love the bride and groom. i loved the wedding. it was beautiful and perfect. it was also fun to help set up the chairs and tables the morning of! fun family/friends experience!

  19. LPG says:

Where is the cake from - I love!

  20. Melinda says:

The tables were set with antique china collected from family ( moms, grandmas and great grandmas) and each place was set with a different pattern. The flowers on the tables were white hydrangea , queen anne's lace tied on the chairs for the ceremony and peonies surrounding the cake. No babys breath in sight. Many thanks to all of the family and friends who helped in the set up and execution of Mariah's ideas. Everyone worked hard to make it perfect.
Melinda ( Mother of the bride)

  21. Mariah says:

I saw the cake in a photo on Martha Stewarts wedding site and loved it. I got our local "cake lady" to recreate it for me. It turned out identical to the picture I brought her.

  22. SW says:

Mariah your ideas are simply fabulous. it's these kind of country-elegant weddings that put the country-club ones to shame. from the antique china to the color palette you really nailed it all. wouldn't be surprised to find these shots in martha's wedding magazine next month!

  23. Catherine says:

I agree with everyone! This is an amazing wedding. I am from Virginia Beach as well. I have a wedding to plan and wanted casual beach elegance. I do not think yall could have done anything better.

  24. Kristy says:

This is so tasteful and lovely! I, strangely, have a question about the groomsmen attire. Did everyone wear the same khaki pants? Did you have jackets or just keep it simple?

  25. Mariah says:

Actually the pictures are a little deceiving. There were only three groomsmen and yes they all wore the same pants and shirts- you can't really tell from the pictures but their shirts had a very light grey check going on which matched the very light grey in the girls bridesmaid dresses. The groom however wore a different pair of khaki pants- slightly different shade than the rest of the guys and a white button down shirt.

The rest of the guys you see in the pictures are the ushers and they all wore their own khaki pants and we bought them the same shirt from J.Crew that had a light stripe in it.

  26. Ashley says:

This wedding is exactly what I had in mind for my own wedding, on my parents farm in Chesapeake, VA! Thank you for helping me realize the potential!!! I had been having a difficult time describing to my mother what I had in mind... but now I can just show her these photos!
Can you tell me what company you rented the chairs from?
    Congrats to you both!

  27. Melinda says:

The chairs were rented from Distinctive Event Rentals. They have about 200 in stock.

  28. lovelyn says:

so beautiful! i love the simplicity to it.where did this wedding take place at? i'm a virginia beach bride to be and i loveeeee this location!

  29. mariahbreitenberg says:

The wedding was at my great grandfathers estate- Sajo Farm (off diamond springs rd.) You would never know it's back there- tucked into the woods.

  30. Becky says:

I love your dress. Ive been looking at a lot of Ramona Keveza options. Any chance you know the style name/number of it and where did you find it? Im in the newport news area.
    Thanks!

  31. lovelyn says:

wow you are one lucky girl! just curious, would your great grandfather ever allow the property to be rented for weddings?
