DIY Project: Custom Place Cards

June 10th. 2009 by Abby Larson | Filed Under | 81 comments

I am so glad that you guys are loving today’s featured wedding as much as I did. Throughout the planning, I knew that Brad and Laura were hard at work designing all of the details, but it wasn’t until I laid eyes on the space, perfectly flawless, that I really understood just how much TLC went into the evening.

Here is yet another fabulous DIY project for all of you…custom place cards!

place card diy

Materials
Color Printer
Paper Cutter
8.5 x 11″ 80lb white card stock
Pre-folded Place Cards 80lb Cardstock (like this from Paper-Source)
Permanent Double Sided Tape

Instructions
1. Download the Wildflower Place Card Template ( or click here for vegetarian, here for chicken, here for fish and here for beef). Print using the highest settings on your color printer to ensure that the image is crisp. There are 10 place cards per sheet.

2. Cut each card on the dashed line, making sure to cut off all of the black ink so that the edge of each card remains white.  The size of the cards should be 1.75” x 3”.

3.  Trim down the pre-folded place cards down to 3.5” x 2.25” using a paper cutter.

4. Secure the card to the pre-folded place card using double sided tape.

5.  Fold the place card along the pre-folded line and Voila!  The wildflower place cards are ready for your handwritten text!

I love love love these diy projects - what a beautiful wedding with such thoughtful details! Thank you so much for sharing them with us.

My only questions are firstly, what font did you use?? This is PERFECT and what we have spent weeks trying to explain to each other and find online!!

Also, is there anyway of downloading a template that can be personalised? I love the wildflower design, but my colours are navy and burnt orange. Also, our shared initial will be 'O' not 'L'. I think these designs are absolutely gorgeous and am so tempted to go for yellow, but too far down the road with orange now!! Not much I can do about my married surname at this stage either, haha!!

  2. Jackie says:

I feel the same way Amy does. I LOVE the template, but I need the color to be green and the letter to be different. Do you have a generic one? Thanks so much!!

  3. WL says:

Hi Abby, I would love to use this, however, I need a generic template that doesn't have a fish, chicken or vegetable on it. Could you load, or send me the plain template? Thank you so much!

  4. KDV says:

I, too, would absolutely LOVE a generic one that did not have the chicken/beef, etc. and that could be changed to navy. This is absolutely PERFECT for our placecards (our invites had wildflowers on them and all of my flowers will be wildflowers) and it would be so great to be able to use this template. Thank you so much!

  5. Laura says:

    KDV,
I sent Abby a blank template with no food choice on the card.

  6. Laura says:

The font type is English Vivace

  7. Laura says:

please email me if you'd like a generic template with no food choice on the card.

    lauracartlidge@alumni.clemson.edu

  8. Abby Larson says:

Hey Guys! We've updated the template so that you have the option of downloading a blank one with just the yellow wild flower and a few that are food specific. If you need a specific color, feel free to leave a note here and we'll see what we can do!

  9. Jackie says:

Oh I LOVE the generic one, and I love everything involved in the DIY projects for this wedding, I just need it in green, not yellow!!!
    Please help!
    Thanks!

  10. Amanda says:

LOVE these DIY projects! My colors are navy and white so these work fantasticaly for me! Quick question: does anyone know if the placecard templates can be used on any Avery (or any other company for that matter) labels? I would love to be able to to do a quick mail merge, print and stick!

Thanks - and Abby keep up the GREAT work!

  11. Carolyn says:

    Hi,

I am just loving these place cards! Like Jackie, I need the wildflower in a tiffany blue. Would that be possible? Thanks!

  12. Randi says:

    Hi! Beautiful wedding and details!!

I have general question, Laura or Abby - how do/did you go about creating a template? Did you use vector files? Our wedding is in November and I am interested to see what other styles I can create but I am not sure where to start?!

    Any advice would be wonderful!!

    Randi

  13. Laura says:

the template was created in indesign

  14. Lindy says:

I would love a bright green template!

  15. Amy says:

Oooo, I'd love it in a burnt orange colour, if it's easy and not too time-consuming for you to do! Thank you so, so much - you both have such beautiful style!

  16. KDV says:

I did already speak with Laura (thanks so much!!!!) but I did want to put in my vote for a navy template! You guys are the best! Thank you for even entertaining the idea of helping us all out :)

  17. Laura says:

I will work on Navy, tiffany blue, bright green and burnt orange placecard templates over the next few days...so stay tuned!!

  18. Laura says:

    Amanda,
I think the placecards will look the best on plain white 80 lb cardstock paper.

  19. OOOOH - I want burnt orange generic template desperately!!! :) Should I just check back here or will you be able to email it?
