Thank you, Megha. Kim, I agree with you completely. The bride is beautiful, everyone was there to celebrate their marriage, the vivid colours were stunning–the elephant was extraneous.

Regarding the elephants, I’m thinking of having either elephants or small ganesh statues as wedding favors. However, I’m having trouble finding them. I just got to this blog–perhaps a bit late. I am Indian as well… and even in India, most people do not have elephants. Or horses, for that matter. Most people, in fact, don’t have enough food to eat. So, that “deep-rooted” tradition is, first off, limited to North India, and second, limited to the very wealthy. And, whether in India or anywhere else, you can bet that elephant is not treated well and is certainly no where near the jungles or plains it should be. And please, give me a break. There are thousands, if not millions, of stories of brides maimed and murdered for not providing enough funds for the opulent wedding and dowry that our “culture” requires. Holding onto one’s cultural heritage is extremely important, but so is being able to recognize its flaws without blind ignorance.

Im Indian, and I agree, a real elephant in America being used as a prop in an event just makes me feel sad for the animal.

I understand its a custom in India, and the animals are probably mistreated their also.

Widows throwing themselves into a fire pit with their dead husband is also a “tradition”.

I’m over it.

I missed that… amazing ! Although I agree a bit with Kim, I doubt “domestic” elephants in countries others than they belong are treated such as they should be (I’m thinking about the conditions of circus animals, and I doubt there are many other “trained” elephants other than in circuses…)
