I’m LDS and I live in central Wisconsin. There is nothing here but strapless (even if it wasn’t a requirement…oh so not a fan of looking like everyone else!) and like Sophia says so many of the “sleeved” options are yucky! So I solved the problem by designing and making my own gown. Right now I’m also helping a friend with hers (she’s getting married in August)

Sleeves are also a great option if you have heavier arms, too. Stay away from cap-sleeves, however. They only call attention to the largest part of your arms. I’d love to see some really modern looking long sleeve dresses. Anyone have any links?

I’m impressed by some of the LDS weddings I’ve seen on this site. I live in east Idaho, and honestly, most of the temple-ready dress are very, very ugly. Your totally right, Rochelle, they usually look like boxy, ill-fitting white t-shirts with poofy skirts hastily added on. Cheap and tawdry looking, IMO.

It’s nice to see some people injecting some of their own personality into these dresses, though. I was tempted to do the sleeve thing, but was really put off by the women who work in our local dress stores treating me like a w***e for wanting to try on some strapless dresses as well. One sales clerk actually told me that the store doesn’t carry dresses for “those kind of women.” **laughs** Strapless it is!

I live in Utah, and while I’m not Mormon (and my dress doesn’t have sleeves), there are a ton of options here for temple-ready gowns (that’s what they call them- “temple-ready”). I’ve heard of many women from other states hiring a seamstress in Utah to either make them a custom gown, or create sleeves on one they purchased. And there are a ton of shops that sell online or have a catalog they can send out. In fact, every dress shop I went to asked me “will you be adding sleeves to this?” I have to say, though, that some dresses do the cap sleeve thing better than others. Some of the shops in Utah sell dresses that look like a satin t-shirt sewn to a fancy skirt. The dress in this post is a great example of how to do it the right way!

I love this post! I am LDS and was a little frustrated with the wedding dress options available to me, so I ended up going with a tea-length gown! It’s great because I don’t feel completely covered from head-to-toe, and still have sleeves!
