Bridesmaid Dress Picks: JCrew

February 10th. 2009 by Abby Larson | Filed Under | 18 comments

Yesterday was all about wedding dresses and today is about that oftentimes harder decision…the bridesmaid dress. I am going to try to stick to my favorites, all while covering a wide variety of price points. Some are modern and flirty, others are more timeless and elegant. First up…bridesmaids’ newest heavy hitter, J. Crew!

Jcrew bridesmaids dresses

The upside of J. Crew…fabulous colors, chic styles and silhouettes, a completely adorable feminine charm. My very favorite in this group is the top middle, yellow dress. LOVE more than I can say. The downside is that some of the styles are a little bit on the pricey side (although they do have this fabulous dress for $59 in some pretty great colors). But all in all, I am nuts about this collection.

Aren't these lovely? Where were these when I got married 11 years ago??

For readers in NYC, there's a great little shop in Brooklyn called Kimera that will make your dresses from measurements out of raw silk, in a bunch of different styles with great colors. I had bridesmaids of a bunch of different styles/body types and every single dress turned out to be so flattering and lovely. Also they're really reasonably priced.

  3. My bridesmaids wore J. Crew last year, and it was the perfct choice. They wore the same colors in different styles, within the same collection. The nice thing about bridesmaids dresses these days is, I think many brides want to choose something the girls will be able to wear again and again!

I love the navy colored dress in the top right corner but can't find it on the website.

That one in the lower left corner would be perfect for a wedding I'm going to be in in September. Is that from their current collection?

  6. Maggie says:

I bought the yellow dress in the "bright rhubarb" color (like a coral/hot pink) for an upcoming shower. It is so flattering on and with discount codes I got it for $40!

A tip for anyone wanting to go with J. Crew but don't want your bridesmaids to spend that much money: my bridesmaids are all wearing J. Crew cotton cady dresses in Deep Atlantic (winter color) in whatever style they chose. I opened a J. Crew credit card and used my first purchase on the card to order all 8 dresses. Your first purchase on your card allows you a 10% discount and I also waited until I received an email from J. Crew with a 15-20% discount coupon on any order over $150 (they send these out periodically). They won't let you use 2 coupon codes if you order online but I called customer service and they put the order through for me with both discounts. When all was said and done, I got each dress for a total of $189 each, including shipping. I was determined to keep their dresses under $200 but I loved the J. Crew line so this worked out perfectly (the dresses ranged between $250 and $275).

I wanted my bridesmaids to wear black...a little back dress. We found one at JCrew that was too cute and I loved the dress so much, I had to get one of my own! I also wore a pink JCrew dress as a bridesmaid last year and they were adorable. You really can't go wrong!

  9. Kelly says:

Oh one other thing, another discount to keep in mind when getting JCrew dresses....students and teachers get 15% of anything. So, if you know someone who could order them for you, that could save a good bit of money. I have onet student and one teacher in the bridal party, so we divided the order up among them....they each saved about $35 on the dress.

Love JCrew! They were so helpful & responsive to my questions about the dresses & colors (you can request a color swatch since colors are hard to decipher online sometimes). My bridesmaids wore the Sophia dress and loved it - plus they can wear them again!

  11. MB says:

About this student discount, can you get it if you buy something online? Also, I didn't see the little black dress in the bottom right corner on the website. Is it new?

  12. Kelly says:

You cannot get the student discount online that I can tell. There's nowhere to enter that information, nor is there a discount code that I'm aware of. If you call, they might do it over the phone....they did it for me once. Otherwise, you can go to the store and show your student ID AND they'll waive the shipping.

  13. Kristi says:

JCrew also has the "red phone" in all their stores that you can call in your orders from and shipping charges are waived.

  14. Mimi says:

Please note when picking out bridesmaid dresses that J.Crew does not carry any plus sizes. You don't want any of your bridesmaids to feel bad because the dress you picked doesn't come in their size!

Ladies, be sure to use this J. Crew coupon code to save on shipping if you decide to purchase any of these dresses! Here's the link if anyone needs it!
