Our next question comes from Catherine…
“I am currently having a color palette problem. I originally was planning on having my bridesmaids wear a burnt orange dress and then incorporate fall reds, oranges and brown into the color palette. My bridesmaid dresses have been decided, and they are a T length chocolate brown. Now, this isn’t too far off from my original idea, but I am having trouble with what color flowers to use. I think it is difficult because when discussing shoes for my bridesmaids, 2 of them randomly said they would like to wear gold shoes….hence I would probably buy them some sort of gold jewelry to bring that together. So, I have brown and gold. Maybe I am thinking way too hard, but do you have any ideas as far as which flowers would complement this combination?”
A. I have to say, I looooove gold and chocolate together. It’s one of those classic combinations that just makes sense. My bridesmaids all wore chocolate gowns with gold strappy shoes and these gorgeous custom earrings by Arianny Dejesus. Bottom line, gold is always a great compliment to chocolate. And, I think that using classic fall hues like an array of oranges and deep reds would be stunning.
I was doing a little brainstorming and although I think that the fall hues would be gorgeous, I also think that a deep terra cotta pink, paired with a peachy orange would be really beautiful and would bring a lightness to your palette that would compliment the chocolate brown. Plus, all of the hues are in the same warm family, so the look would be incredibly inviting…

I think you could still use the orange and red in the bouquets. There's so many beautiful combinations. With deeper colored flowers and dresses I think the gold will be a good accent color. But, if you aren't warming up to the gold idea, you can always go back to your original palette but with the dresses and shoes being brown, orange somewhere else. There's no pleasing everyone.
These were my colors as well as a brides that I helped last October. I used red, orange and yellow flowers for all of our bouquets (sorry, I can't remember what kind they were!). My bridesmaids had black sun dresses and the colors were great since they popped against the dark of their dresses.
First of all, think about the look that YOU want. Do you want gold in there or does it mess up your other plans? If it confuses everything, stick with your original plan. It's your day, you don't want to be looking back, a bit bitter about how things turned out. Always think "will I regret this?" if the answer is yes, or maybe, don't do it.
I love the idea of red going with Brown and Gold. I think that Orange and Yellow wouldn't look great with it, but then it could depend on how it's done. Also, another option might be to have the bridesmaids bouquets in just greenery. Different kinds, different heights, but just green. Then your bouquet and your husbands flower could be colorful, but the groomsmen and the bridesmaids stick with green. I think that would look great.
Let us know what you decide!

Brown fits right in with your original fall color scheme. Though, gold might look a bit out of place with the natural colors. What about going more along the champagne route? Still a gold tone, without the SHINY metallic gold. A friend of mine did the fall colors last year with the oranges and reds set off by brown - it was beautiful. I think you will love always looking back at pictures and being able to feel the warmth through the colors of your flowers.
My main colors at my wedding this past October were chocolate and champagne.
My BM bouquets consisted of reds, oranges, and deep pinks (coxcomb, specifically), and looked fantastic when paired with the various shades of brown, light gold (accents on my dress as well as at the reception), and champagne(shiny ivory, really! :)) incorporated into the wedding. Our centerpieces were 100% orange roses. My bouquet was supposed to be white and ivory roses, but wound up being ivory and peach toned roses...that was the only disappointment when it came to flowers for the day. But it still wasn't distracting, really.
I told my florist that I was looking to make the BM bouquets have sunset tones to them. It worked out perfectly! Hope that helps in some way...
Brown and gold are neutral colors that tend to go well with any color you pair them with. Personally I think brown dresses with gold shoes sound cute, I dont think you would need to buy the gold jewelery either. As for the flowers you could use deep reds and bring a pop of color with bright orange from gerbera daisies, roses, or even dahlias. If you wanted to tie the bouquet colors together better with the dresses, I would consider having your BM's wear sashes that match one of the colors in the bouquet or even the gold shoes. Whatever you decide, make sure its what you want, and try not to let the peanut gallery control your decisions.
Hey ladies, my sister just had a fall wedding. I was her maid of honor and I carried "chocolate" roses, they are basically antique looking. There may have been a mix of orange/cream carnations or other flowers in the mix. There were also orange berry looking things on sticks coming out of it.
I too am getting married in the fall. I have chosen champagne dresses and chocolate brown tux's. We just met with our florist and we are doing burnt oranges(orchids and roses), lime greens (like spider mums and orchids), and some greenery. Instead of doing white in my bouquet we went with a marigold yellow color. I think you can incooperate fall colors in general and all will look good. Brown and gold are very nice- but if you originally wanted some other colors don't be afraid to add them in. There are some beautiful bouquet's out there that are fall inspired that have a whole array of colos!!!
At first I was totally going to say the fall palette but I love that pink maybe with sage green and that dusty blue -- a little more muted than Robin's Egg? I love those colors with brown and have seen it happening in a lot of housewares but not so much with clothes yet.
Dear Abby,
I'm a rookie diy invitation maker. My fiance and I are having a warping problem with our paper and adhesive. Do you have any product/technique suggestions that will not make the paper buckle once glued?
Thanks!!
I think that gold shoes, gold earrings, and some gold spray-painted poppy seed pods or twisty vines or even wires, or dried flowers, or anything else you would like to spray-pain in gold - combined with red and orange toned flowers - with brown and gold hanging ribbons from the bouquets - and the brown dresses - would be great together...
