This is a great Dear Abby question, as I know that many of you aren’t interested in classic bridesmaid style dresses…
Q4 - I’m getting married on the Cape in September so we are definitely keeping true to a casually, chic beach wedding. But I am really not having a feeling for bridesmaid dresses. Do you know of any lines that make maxi style, long dresses? Something a little more modern in shape then just the traditional tee length style? This being said I have a range of sizes for my girls.
A4 - I love, love, love the Maxi style dresses that are back in style. And, I love that you are willing to think outside of the bridesmaid box for your girls…they are very lucky and will definitely get a lot of use out of the dress that you choose! Here are some of my picks for Maxi dresses…
Left Column Gowns on Bloomingdales, Center Top at Nordstrom Center Bottom at Bloomingdales, Top Right at Victoria’s Secret, Bottom Right at Saks.
I am always looking at popular stores for alternate ideas to bridemaids dresses. With that said, I do have some favorite bridal designers that have AMAZING bridesmaids dresses…Jenny Yoo, Olivia Luca, Vera Wang, Melissa Sweet. I could go on, but I think you already know the designers that I am talking about. Hope this helps!

I’d look at some sources other than traditional bridesmaid companies. I’ve seen a lot more maxi style dresses out there…simple, chic, and modern. I know Anthropologie has one now, oddly Victoria’s Secret online seems to have a few, and look at Nordstrom online…they have a great selection of dresses.

Great question! I’m a photographer on Nantucket, and I shoot on the Cape often. 100% of the weddings I do in this area, the bridesmaids wear tea length dresses.
I would actually prefer a long dress myself, because even though September here is beautiful, it can get quite chilly.
It’s great to do a nice bright color, especially if you are right on the beach, to contrast the blue of the water and the pale sand. Colors I’m seeing a lot on the Cape are bright greens and navy blues.
Check out Vera Wang’s collection of long dresses at Meredith’s Bridal in Mashpee for ideas, http://www.meredithsbridalboutique.com/maids.html.
Happy planning!

Butter by Nadia dresses also makes a long wrap dress that can be worn over 100 ways, and is one size fits all. It comes in two fabrics- jersey and satin. It’s what I’m doing for my bridesmaids.

I am getting married in late may on top of the ski mountain in Telluride, Co and also wanted something out of the norm, that the girls can wear again, all year if possible, and would cross over to many occasions. I went with the two birds dresses and love them. I am larger than both of the women in my wedding and the dress looked to great on me that I am thinking about ordering it too! Also, I generally do not like long dresses, but loved this one in long and ended up ordering that one. Good luck!
