We are so excited about some of the upcoming features that SMP has in the works…from rounding out the Little Black Book with new vendors and additional cities, to creating resource guides and event calendars in your area, we are working really hard to transform SMP into both an inspirational and practical resource for all of you that are planning a wedding.
One of the guides that we are working on, is our Cake Decor Guide. It seems that there are so many chic ways to dress up your cake, from cake jewelry to cupcake wrappers…
From Vintage Cake Toppers…
To Sweet, Contemporary Toppers…
All products featured above can be purchased at Fancy Flours
The options in cake decor seem to be much more abundant now than they ever have. So, we are putting this mission to our readers. What is your FAVORITE source for wedding cake decor? It can be anything from great new cupcake wrappers, to edible jewels or even pre-made fondant decorations. Just write a note with your favorite source in the comments section of our site. As a thank you, we will be offering a $100 Amazon gift certificate to a random commenter (so that you can pick up that wedding book you’ve been dying to get but can’t quite justify).
**update…we’ve chosen our winner! Claire Harvey has been selected to receive the Amazon gift card. Thank you so much to everyone who answered. We are going to complile these tips into a cake topper guide!

I love the pre-made fondant flowers/decorations that you can buy ready made from people like Wendy Kromer (who does almost all the amazing Martha Stewart wedding cakes). They can turn a plain, simple fondant or smooth buttercream frosted cake into a designer one in minutes & for a fraction of the cost!

I got my cake topper from Wilton.com …it is just a simple little bride and groom - looks fairly vintage and has a very vintage price (I think it cost about $7!).
Comment by Katie on 29 January 2008:
well Fancy flours is my very best source for cake decor but for inspiration it has to be SMP! I used my “board” and just followed through on my theme! thanks SMP!
Comment by Robin on 29 January 2008:
I love the cup cake wrappers from paperorchidstationery.com
I plan on surprising my fiance with a cup cake “groom’s cake” decorated with these wrappers
Comment by Veroni on 29 January 2008:
Ebay!! Just cause I’m cheap, and it was easier to buy the plain monogram cake toppers from there and bling them out myself.
Comment by LK on 29 January 2008:
There are some amazing ones on Etsy, but I admit, I bought mine on ebay - not a “topper”, just a little figure of two faeries.
Comment by Glamour This! by Kelly on 29 January 2008:
Ooo… Im loving the vintage cake toppers. If only I could find a vintage glam with movies of the 40s influence cake topper that would be great…
my search still contirnues. Thanks for the links! I love anything that has to do with yummy cakes!!!
Comment by Ivana on 29 January 2008:
Meredith at http://www.corporatepig.com does custom polymer clay in a very unique particular style that can be transformed into cake topper like this: http://www.genuineimitation.com/cassie/images/portland%20june%2007%20046.jpg
It’s the kind of source that won’t suit “everyone” but to me this is one of a kind, very adorable and inspiring!
Comment by One Love Photo on 29 January 2008:
I have been loving laser cuts these days so of course I think those cupcake wrappers are amazing!
Comment by Laura on 29 January 2008:
I wish I would have known about that site when I was married. We had beautifully decorated cupcakes - but if I could change one thing it would be the boring regular old cupcake wrappers! The laser cut ones are so cute!

My favorite place for cake decor has been my own family. I’m currently considering using either my parent’s or my grandparent’s cake toppers. They are pretty as well as meaningful!

I absolutely love the cake toppers designed and created by Chapeau de Gateau http://www.chapeaudegateau.com/!
Textile designer and artist Alison Dawson creates lovely toppers using exquisite Mokuba ribbons. I picked up her postcard in the Mokuba store in Toronto last weekend. I had been considering making my own cake topper as few of the ones I’ve seen appeal but I have now changed my mind….
Comment by Casie on 29 January 2008:
My favorite place to go to for wedding cake ideas is MarthaStewart.com and of course Style Me Pretty
Comment by Amanda Guccione on 29 January 2008:
My coworker who is in pastry school! She has awesome ideas and I love to pick her brain. She just brought in tons of beautiful hand made edible flowers a la Sylvia Weinstock.
Comment by Whitney on 29 January 2008:
I’ve had a heard time deciding on what my cake decor will be so I have decided to make it a family affair. Before the wedding all of the woman in my family and my fiances family are going to get together and everyone is going to make their signature cake or pie. To keep the decor cohesive, the icing will be either white or brown and each cake/pie will sit on milk glass cake stand of varying heights. I can’t wait!!

I’ve always loved the look of a simple design stenciled on a cake, whether on the sides or top. http://www.culinarystencils.com has many stencils to choose from, and was just featured in the winter Martha Stewart Weddings.

Comment by Kirsten Rutherford on 30 January 2008:
Ok, for all you international girls out there (or those who don’t mind international postage)..here’s my faves.
I’m making my own wedding cupcakes and have been experimenting for the last year!
You can get the most amazing cake decorations from squires sugarcraft (http://www.squires-group.co.uk)
From chocolate transfers to put onto white chocolate cake collars to beautiful premade chocolate curls, fans or cigarillos (some even in striped chocolate).
I also love the selection of ribbons and ribbon flowers from http://www.vvrouleaux.com. They are a very famous old London haberdashery shop and their craftmanship is stunning. I’ve decorated cupcakes and smaller cakes with beaded braiding, plus I’ve used their diamantes in with fresh flowers as a cake topper.
Of course, those gorgeous cupcake filigree paper holders have always held a special place in my heart!! : )

Ann Wood did a custom cake topper for me–it was perfect! She used fabric from our actual wedding day clothes and even shaped tiny wire glasses to look like my groom’s glasses! Brilliant! Check it out at:

I simple adore Lauren Alane’s love bird cake toppers. They are so adorable and I love that each bird conveys so much personality and character. The birds are such a lovely way to portray the couple’s individual personalities (http://laurenalane.blogspot.com/) and they would be so sweet to portray in their new homes.

I’m having cupcakes and wanted to top each with a letter to spell out our names and our wedding date!
Comment by Kate on 31 January 2008:
Fancy Flours has cute items, but they find them on ebay. I lost an ebay auction to them. They won it for $65, so I headed over to their site to see if I could buy it for them, and low and behold they were selling it for $250. What kind of mark up is that? I bought mine on ebay, a sweet vintage kewpie pair for $45 and Fancy Flours was selling it for $100. You pay because they do the “work” for you! You’re better off bidding on your own!
Comment by la fille on 31 January 2008:
I got this idea from weddingbee and Mrs Bell Pepper (have to give props to her for finding this), but I think even if the super cute girl/guy on bike are not for you, you could find something unique (and possibly quirky if you like) at this shop.

Hi,
I am in love with the cake stand under the cupcakes, but can’t find it on the site given. Is it a paper addition? Is it glass? Where can I get one?
