Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

After a much needed mini-break with my family, I am so excited to feature the last of the DIY Contest entries. If you didn't get yours in on time, or if you sent me your project and it didn't make it up, shoot me an email and I will let you know when our next contest will be. For those of you that sent multiple entries, I picked those that I thought our readers would love the most...we can happily enter your projects that didn't make it on the site in our next contest.

Okay, diving right in....I honestly can't believe that these flowers were all DIY. Absolutely amazing and so professional...

Diy_flowers

I love these outdoor signs. They are one part vintage, one part charming...altogether a perfect detail in a sweetly sophisticated way...

Diy_signs_2

These flower escort cards are just darling. Each one holds a handful of Jordan Almonds giving the guests a sweet treat...

Flower_escort_cards

I really believe that if you are having a seated dinner, a printed menu is a must. And, these oh-so-elegant DIY Menus make the perfect first impression for your guests...

Diy_menu

And finally, these gorgeous pocketfold invitations were inspired by a watercolor print that the couple just loved. So beautiful!

Pocketfold_invitations

Thank you SO much to everyone who entered this contest. I know that these projects are near and dear to your heart, and we want you to know that they will provide hours upon hours of inspiration for the rest of us.

We will be voting tomorrow, so spend some time this evening checking out the past entries in the How-To section at the top of the page. For those of you that are just dying for more details and how-to tips for each of these projects, sit tight...we are working on the how-to gallery as we speak!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

Today is the last day of our DIY Wedding Projects Contest! We are going to be posting a handful of projects this morning, then again later this afternoon. I'd love for you to then spend some time over the weekend perusing the previous entries to see which ones are your favorites. All of the entries are listed under the "How-To" category at the top of the blog.

First up today, these brocade inspired invitations are absolutely beautiful....

Diy_brocade_invitation

These tablescapes, which includes the table runners, the table numbers and the menus, are the perfect combination of girly sophistication....

Diy_tablescapes

I love this DIY garter, which managed to incorporate something old and something blue (the blue pocket held the bride's something old...a vintage handkerchief from her grandmother and her something borrowed...an antique bracelet from her mom)...

Diy_garter

This particular bride and groom was very brave...they designed and letterpressed their own invitations! After taking a letterpress class in Portland, the couple set off to create something that was not only beautiful, it was unique to themselves...

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

We are moving right along with our DIY Wedding Projects Contest! I am in constant awe at the creativity and imagination of the ladies that submitted these ideas...it is completely inspiring! These drop dead gorgeous wedding invitations were created totally custom to reflected the couple's style and the feel of the wedding (which is actually just a few days after New Year’s!)...

Diy_invitations_red

I'm not sure that I have seen anything quite this cute in a long time...this DIY Cake Topper was created by the groom, inspired by the couple themselves...the first pictures shows the couple so that you can see the likeness in the cartoon cake topper...

Diy_cake_topper

These Origami Bouquets and Boutonnieres are so insanely creative, I am 100% convinced that the bride should be doing this professionally. I wouldn't have thought to extend the origami into the bouquets, but she has pulled it off so beautifully, you don't even miss the real flowers!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

Continuing on with our Do-It-Yourself Wedding Contest, these place card trees are jaw-droppingly gorgeous. The best part though, is that they are made using really accessible materials and supplies. Too cute for words...

Diy_place_card_tree

How to make the Placecard Tree...

For the placecards:
I used Stardream metallic cover stock in quartz that I purchased from
http://www.paper-papers.com/.  I designed a simple layout on MS Word, and used the font Murray Hill to write each person's name on the placecard.  I then printed them on a Dell Laser printer (printing on Stardream cover stock can be tricky!).  I made them so they would fold over, so we could glue the fringe and ribbon inside without it looking ugly on the back.
I used a bone folder to fold my printed placecards in half, so I could cut two slits in the top folded area, to slip my ribbon through and glued it to the inside of the card.   I used beaded fringe for the dangling crystals, it was easier to work with than individual crystals and you couldn't tell once you glued it inside. It looked like this but I purchased it at Home Fabrics in Downtown Los Angeles. I cut the fringe so it had 5 crystals and then glued it to the inside bottom and then pressed the folded placecard shut to hold the fringe in place.

For the actual trees:
We bought manzanita branches at a place called Wasabi Green in downtown LA, but I know you can order them online at:

http://www.nettletonhollow.com/manzanita.html

We created some bases out of wood, in a trapezoid shape, which we then covered with the light shantung fabric, adding the fabric was a little hard, we started off by using fabric glue and then also cutting and sewing parts of it, so that the ends would sit taut on the trapezoidal base. We the glued on a 1 1/2 inch brown satin ribbon and the rhinestone buckle. We secured the branches in the tree with expanding foam and anchored them with some heavier rocks, so they wouldn't topple over. We then covered the top of all that mess with some moss so it would look pretty on top.

I have received a fortune or two at weddings, and yet they never fail to make me smile. These custom fortunes are such a cute way to add a little personality and whimsy into your affair...

Diy_fortunes

For those of you that are really anxious to get the complete "how-to" details for the projects that we are featuring, we will be adding a DIY gallery with all of the tips and secret sources, in the next 2 weeks. We will keep you posted on the timing. With that said, we still have more insanely creative DIY projects coming in the next few days!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

I hope everyone had a wonderful holiday! I am still in Christmas mode...a little lazy, a little chubby thanks to all of that amazing holiday grub and just a little dreamy.  I am glad that we are jumping right back into our Do-It-Yourself contest to get the inspiration and motivation flowing!

Our first entry is so creative...Origami Pop Quizzes! The couple used these darling favors at the rehearsal dinner, which featured fun questions and quotes that helped their guests to interact and get to know the couple even more...

Diy_origami

The second entry is just brilliant....Custom Vinyl inspired Cds and Sleeves filled with the couple's favorite songs. Reminiscent of the old vinyl records, these Cds celebrated the couple's love of music, while adding a vintage flair to an oh-so-chic event....

Diy_vinyls

These great keepsake boxes were placed next to the guestbook, one decorated with a collage, the other covered in emails that the couple exchanged during their relationship. Guests could write words of wisdom or well wishes, then place them in the box...a forever keepsake for the bride and groom...

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

I love these invitations that were inspired by this oh-so-cute story...

"My husband and I met while living in a housing co-op full of hippie grad students. We were assigned to cook dinner together one night - I made bread and he made some truly impressive crispy fried chicken. I always like to say that he first got my attention with that chicken. Our friends and family know this story and know us today as avid home cooks, so the image on our invitation really made them smile."

Diy_school_invitations

These are brilliant ideas for a black and white wedding...each detail adds a bit of charm to an ultra chic palette...

Diy_noir

That is all for today! We will pick up where we left off right after the holidays, next Wednesday. Have a wonderful holiday weekend...let these amazing DIY projects inspire you to wrap beautifully, bake deliciously and decorate thoughtfully!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

We are just about to wrap up our Do-It-Yourself Wedding Contest...and yet, I'm just not ready to let it go! I really want to make sure that every entry is given the time and attention that it deserves. So rather, than jamming the blog with tons of entries today, we are going to extend the contest until the end of next week!

We won't be blogging on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day, but Wednesday thru Friday will be filled with fun entries to get you thru the rest of your work week. If you have a project that you are dying to share, but missed the deadline, feel free to send them to me by Monday. We can still enter them in the contest.

So, jumping right in...I know that you are going to LOVE these next few entries. First, the DIY Bridesmaid Survival Kits that were mentioned a few weeks ago....

Diy_bridesmaid_survival_kit

Next, this oh-so-perfect "Kissing Tree."  As an alternative to the clinking of glasses, the guests approach the tree and pluck off a matchbook. The MC then reads aloud what they have to do to have the bride and groom kiss. Things like answering bride and groom trivia, singing a love song with your table and preforming a charade of a "wedding" movie...

Diy_kissing_tree

This DIY wreath is so incredibly elegant...

Diy_wreath

I have to say, the birch inspired candle holders are one of my personal favorites...I honestly can't believe that this bride made them by hand, but we have the pictures to prove it. Just goes to show, with a little imagination and a little muscle, you really can create store-worthy details...

Diy_tree_holders

And speaking of details, I wanted to enter these final touches as one entry...perfect little accouterments that turned this wedding into a beautiful affair. I love the pink palette paired with the rustic ambiance...

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

I haven't ever seen anything like this next entry...origami branches, used as a colorful touch to an elegant wedding. I can't believe how beautiful they are...

Diy_origami_flowers

This rhinestone monogram is the perfect way to add a little sparkle to your day...

Diy_rhinestone_monogram

I honestly can't believe how talented all of you guys are...I feel like we should open a shop together. You would all be millionaires! We will continue on with the brilliant entries tomorrow. Have a great evening!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

Continuing on with our DIY Contest, I am completely smitten with these coat check tags...adding a bit of whimsy and personality into the most unexpected place...

Diy_coat_check_tags

How to make Coat Check Tags...

I designed the template myself and printed them out at home on Crane's 179 lb. Pearl White Cover (www.crane.com). I trimmed each one out using an x-acto and ruler. Then, using Fiskars 1/8" hole punch I made a hole to place the eyelet. Before adding the eyelet I scored each card so that the ticket could be torn evenly. To do this I used the Fiskars Rotary Paper Trimmer with the Perforating Blade (www.fiskarscrafts.com). Then the 1/8" eyelet t is added by hammering it with a setter (www.impressrubberstamps.com).

Email me for the Coat Check Template, abby at style me pretty dot com!

These hair pins are drop dead gorgeous. Romantic, ethereal and subtle...they would be the perfect addition to any gown...

Hair_pins

The flower top favor boxes that this reader designed and created look absolutely professional. Based on a modified template she found online, these boxes fold from a single sheet of paper without glue...

Diy_favor_boxes

And finally, these beautiful olive branch inspired invitations and favors are about as close to perfect as you can get. They are elegant, soft and seem so personal.

Diy_invitations_olive

Still more entries to come today!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

First of all, I am sorry that I didn't get to post more DIY projects yesterday. I was traveling, and for those of you that have traveled during the holidays, you know what an ordeal it is! By the time we finally got to my parent's house, I was so tired, I just fell into bed.

But, I am completely refreshed and ready to dive right back into our Do-It-Yourself Contest.

The first round of projects were all done by one bride, who clearly has an eye for pretty things and the creative talent to really make it work! These beautiful pear favors prove that a perfect gift is one that is simple and lovely...

Diy_pear_favors

These flower cones are such a great way to bring a little color to your ceremony. By using different patterns on the paper, the overall look seems thoughtful but whimsical...

Diy_flower_cones

I love the detail on these cupcakes...each one is different, elegantly mismatched...

Diy_cupcakes

These table runners and floral arrangements just might be the highlight of the day...the toille fabric and the vintage milk bottles are just perfect...

Diy_table_runners

We have a ton of entries today, so definitely check back periodically...I promise, it's worth it.

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

It's only Wednesday and already we have seen such wonderful creativity in our DIY contest entries. Thank you so much to everyone who sent me their gorgeous work! I know that a lot of you are anxious to get the DIY instructions for some of our projects...not to worry, we will be launching a gallery next week that showcases all of the entries, along with a more detailed understanding of how YOU can incorporate the ideas into your own wedding.

Let's get started! I love, love, love the Journal Placecards that this reader designed...pure beauty (and something that guests will really hold on to)...

Diy_journal_placecards

And these, gorgeous invitations seem like perfect introduction to an elegant, but oh-so-sweet affair...

Diy_chocolate_invitations

The polaroid guestbooks are the best way to incorporate a little personality and fun into an age old tradition...

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

More DIY entries to inspire you! The first two, designed by the same person, would make the CUTEST favors...I love the vintage-chic element of these projects.

Diy_favors

This oh-so-cute box of chocolate was completely DIY...

Diy_chocolates_box_2

These perfect wedding details are just beautiful...they seem to add a personal touch, while still seeming effortless!

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

These Luggage Tag Save the Dates are the cutest things I have ever seen...

Diy_luggage_tags

To Make DIY Luggage Tags:

These luggage tags were backed with white linen and tied with gold and pink taffeta ribbon. I used sheets of watercolor paper which had a lovely textured surface and I printed A4 sheets with 9 cards on each, designing the layout in photoshop. I cut each card to a luggage tag shape before spreading a very fine layer of PVA glue on the back, making sure that every inch of the card was covered to avoid getting any air bubbles, then laying them onto sheets of white linen. Once the glue had dried I cut around them, punched a hole in the shaped end using a hole punch then added an eyelet through which I could tie the ribbon. Adding the eyelets was the most difficult part as they require some serious banging with a hammer and I kept hitting my fingers!

Then I popped them in envelopes and sent them off!

All of the materials I used were very basic and available from any arts and crafts shop - watercolour paper, linen (or any fabric you want), ribbon, metal eyelets, PVA glue + glue spreader, scissors and envelopes to fit. The cards were a bit fiddly and time consuming but looked gorgeous when they were finished and have received loads of compliments which made them worth the hours of work!

A set of absolutely gorgeous, Polish-inspired wedding invitations. The colors are so pretty!

Diy_invitations_2

How clever are these dress form place cards, inspired by a vintage clothing display...just goes to show, creativity and inspiration can come from so many different places!

Diy_silhouette_place_cards_2

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

We are continuing on with our do-it-yourself contest entries today...so I am going to dive right in! I love this first entry...fortune inspired menus! Each flap has a course listed on the outside and the details listed under the flap.  Each place setting had a menu sitting at it on top of a folded napkin...

Diy_fortunes

These gorgeous invitations were designed inspired by the green and chocolate color palette, all using very simple (and inexpensive) products...

Diy_invitations

This next entry is great, because it is something that every bride struggles with...what to do with your gorgeous bouquet after the festivities are over. Heather solved that problem with this oh-so-perfect shadow box, preserving her bouquet to last...

Bridal_bouque_shaddow_box

More to come throughout the day!

December 17, 2007

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

I am in love with this DIY monogrammed wreath...made of grapevine and wire, the wreath will be adorned with fresh flowers and hung with thick, chocolate brown ribbon...

Diy_wreaths

These vintage guestbooks were inspired by the bride's grandmother's collection of antique Reader's Digest books...using vintage and blank pages, they bound this amazing book...add a photobooth and gluesticks, and you have such a great keepsake!

Diy_vintage_guestbooks

And this gorgeous save the date was done by a reader who is having an intimate 10th Anniversary party...perfectly enclosed in a silk invitation box...

Silk_box_save_the_date

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

The next DIY entry was designed by reader, Katherine...coaster table cards, featuring her Dad's famous gin and tonic recipe, inspired by an article she saw in Martha Stewart...

Diy_table_coasters

This next one, by Amanda, is the perfect DIY project for someone looking to do a personalized, but affordable save the date...

Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

I hope everyone had a lovely weekend! I am so excited about this week....we are debuting the best and the most innovative DIY projects. When I initially started the contest, I decided to only post the best of the best, the top five or so favorites. But, I honestly loved so many of them, I really thought you guys would want to see ALL of them.  So that is just what I am going to do!

I am going to write a brief description of what they are, then the full how-to will go into our DIY Gallery, after the contest closes. We will vote this coming weekend.

Starting from the beginning...here is the first entry we receieved, a DIY Wedding Cake that cost less than $200 to make!

Diy_wedding_cake_2

The next entry is so cute...DIY  WIndmill Seating Cards, inspired by the timber farm where the couple was married. Each placecard was "planted" into a tree seedling, for the guests to take home as favors.

Many more to come!

A Beautiful Bride

If the wedding itself, shot by Elizabeth Messina, wasn't gorgeous enough...just look at this bride. Her perfectly stunning hair, that incredible gown, and the McDreamy groom. You just don't get more beautiful...

Beautiful_bride

Thank you so much, Elizabeth, for sharing this amazingly beautiful wedding with us!

An Inspired Affair...

The lovely and talented Elizabeth Messina sent me these oh-so-gorgeous images from a recent wedding that she did...

Traditional_elegant_wedding

Let me tell you what I absolutely love about these photos. They are traditional, they are elegant, they are magazine-worthy. And yet, there is a level of simplicity about the style of this wedding, that seems so approachable and real. Although I am sure this wedding was quite spectacular, it's a look that seems to translate to affairs both grand and small. I love that.

December 13, 2007

Black and White Wedding Photography

There is just something about black and white photography. Although I am usually partial to the brilliance of a beautiful, full color photo... when it comes to weddings, the black and white photography will make me tear up every time. It's timeless, it's romantic...it's sort of magical.

I am absolutely smitten with the work over at Artisan Events, a Little Black Book member and a studio that I have admired for years now...

Black_and_white_wedding_photography

You know that a photographer is pure talent when a black and white image conveys as much intensity and emotion as any photo you've ever seen. In these photos, you see sheer happiness, utter romance, playfulness and love...the makings of a work of art. Okay, maybe a bit cheesy, but it's true. These photographs just warm my heart!

Wedding Dresses by Austin Scarlett

If the gowns that I featured earlier today were stunning in their simplicity and affordability, this next set of gowns are those that we dream about as little girls. Fairytale dresses fit for a queen.

Designed by Project Runway's Austin Scarlett for the beloved Kenneth Pool brand, these dresses are basically works of art...

Austin_scarlett_wedding_dresses_2

The detail is quite unbelievable...the lace overlays, the beading, the dramatic silhouettes. These are some serious gowns. And, the princess inside of me, absolutely loves them!

Wedding Dresses by Ann and Nicole

I love these dresses by Ann Taylor...

Ann_taylor_wedding_dresses

The silhouette on that first gown is absolutely goreous. These by Nicole Miller at Nordstrom are super chic, and even better...super affordable! At $578 and $238 respectively, this is a brilliant way to keep control of your budget, while still looking like you spent a fortune!

Nicole_miller_wedding_dresses

Wedding Dresses by J Crew

I spent some time last night pouring through the Spring and Fall 2008 bridal runways on Brides.com...and I am officially blown away by that J Crew! I am just so impressed by the sweet sophistication of their wedding dresses...

J_crew_wedding_dresses_2

And we all know, the bridesmaids dresses are just too cute for words... especially, the new plaid one!

J_crew_bridesmaids_dresses

I love that a classic, old brand is really trying to redefine themselves with their new bridal line. I know that last year, they literally sold out of stock on some of their gowns. Hopefully, this year, they will be a little more prepared...I have a feeling they are going to sell like hotcakes.

So all of this J Crew stuff got me inspired...who else is designing chic wedding dresses that are one part affordable and one part gorgeous? I am going to be playing detective today, so if you have any really good sources, do share!

December 11, 2007

Calendars by Pearl Papers

I was poking around Pearl Papers, the Black Pearl Paper online shop, when I stumbled upon these oh-so-cute, letterpressed calendars!

Letterpress_by_black_pearl_press

I am going to pick up a few for gifts...they are so perfectly lovely!  Plus, they are packaged in that great reusable cotton, drawstring bag, so there's no wrapping required. Love that!

Winter Color Palette

Just as I fell in love with the floral arrangement from today's earlier post, I have totally fallen for this Winter color palette...

Winter_color_palette

Flowers from Domino Magazine, Little Black Dress by Maggie London at Nordstrom, Letterpress Invitation by Black Pearl Press, Ring Pillow as seen on Rebecca Thuss, Calligraphy Cake by Edith Meyer, White Florals by Petal's Edge

What I really love about the flowers in the top left photo are the contrasting hues...the soft, white-washed pastels paired with the rich shades of the buds. I used this dichotomy as inspiration for our color palette....subtle, almost white pinks and greens, paired with the sophistication and elegance of a little black dress. I love, love, love the end result.

I can completely envision a snowy, winter wedding complete with touches of unabashed luxury, femininity and elegance. Layers of different textures and fabrics, from velvets (table runners) and cashmeres (wraps for the bride and her maids), to lace (ring pillows and favor bags) and thick raw silk (linens). Perfect for a small, intimate wedding at a lovely restaurant or winery.

A Winter Wedding Color Palette

About once a week, I pull out all of my back issues of domino and blueprint magazine, get settled on the sofa...and start my quest to find inspiration. Tuesdays have become somewhat of our "color palette" day, so when I saw this stunning floral arrangement in Domino, I thought it perfect inspiration for today's post...

Anemones

I have been in love with this particular page for a long time...and now envisioning it as a winter wedding palette, I fell in love all over again. Check back in an hour so, to see the full board that I am working on!

In the meantime, click here to read the oh-so-sad news on Blueprint Magazine...

DIY Contest Reminder!

I wanted to take a moment to remind everyone that we are still taking entries for the Do-It-Yourself contest! The entries that we have received thus far are pretty amazing...but to be honest, we haven't received that many! I really want to encourage everyone to roll up their sleeves, get their hands dirty, and get their submission in!

Blush_diy_board

{This board of do-it-yourself projects was sent to me by reader Lisa, of Blush Events...she wasn't sure which entry to submit. How stinking cute is this? All of the projects are so pretty...and yet so doable! The numbers correspond to the following projects: 1 Ceremony Decor; Arch and Aisle Pomanders / 2 Wedding Pie / 3 Bridesmaid Survival Kits / 4 The Kissing Tree / 5 Signage / 6 Water Bottles / 7 Reception Decor; Centrepieces, Place Cards, Escort Cards, Etc. / 8 Cookie Box Favours / 9 Stationary / 10 Gifts}

With the holidays being right around the corner, I understand if you need more time. For now, we are going to keep the deadline for entries at December 15th. But, if you think you need a bit more time, leave me a comment and I will consider extending! More than anything, I want our entries to be beautiful and plentiful. I know that so many of you out there are brilliant at things like that...now is your time to show off your skills!

All of the entries that are posted on the blog will go into a DIY gallery so that brides can find great ways to create beauty in their wedding, without spending a fortune!

Wedding Photography by Christine Taylor

I hope that everyone had a lovely weekend!

I was so thrilled to receive these absolutely gorgeous photos from Christine Taylor...they satisfy both my need for really beautiful things on a Monday morning AND our recent purple obsession...

Purple_inspired_wedding

This palette just blows me away...the hue of the purples, paired with the slight touches of red and gold...absolutely gorgeous. And, it seems appropriate for any fall or winter wedding, no matter how grand or intimate it might be. Thanks so much to Christine for helping me start our week off with a little flair!

A Real Wedding by Darling Events, II

I absolutely love all of the details that Natalie infused into her wedding. Each element made the day seem personal and completely unique...

Darling_events_real_wedding_2_2

The save the dates and invitations were created and designed by Natalie...how great is that Horse-Shoe inspired Save the Date? I absolutely love it! The photo on the bottom left is Natalie's rendition of a guest book...she had her friends and family write little notes, then be photographed holding their sentiments. Such a wonderful idea.

Before I get too carried away, I thought that I should have Natalie tell us what she felt really made her wedding special...grab a cup of coffee (or a glass of wine...it's five o'clock somewhere right?) and get ready to be totally inspired...

from Natalie

1. Dan and I knew that our wedding could possibly be the only occasion where our families would meet. July 7th, 2007 was undeniably the perfect date for our celebration and inspired our theme of Old Irish Luck. With the theme in mind, I began looking into Irish tradition: flowers, ceremonies and lucky folklore. The Irish have A LOT to say about how one can become and remain lucky!  Our floral horseshoe save the dates set the mood for our guests and reflected our own personal style.  My business partner and I had a lot of fun illustrating and screen printing both save the dates and invitations.

2.  Before I was engaged, I had marked a page in Martha Stewart Weddings featuring a gorgeous Vera Wang gown, one I never thought I’d be lucky enough to have for myself. A year later I found myself at Barneys trying it on and knew I had to have it!  I accessorized it with “new” red shoes, my grandma’s “old” vintage rhinestone and pearl earrings, a pearl bracelet given to me as a bridesmaid gift from my stepmom, and my “something borrowed” a delicate 1920’s hair piece worn by my maid of honor for her wedding, given to her by her sister who found it in a New Orleans vintage boutique.

3. Vanity was unwelcome in the process of planning. I didn’t want to get worked into a frenzy of self guilt, starvation and exercise for my wedding in order to get down to a dream weight. I love food and I do NOT love exercise.  Dan knows me well and I knew that Dan chose me as I was on any day of the week or year. I was happy to feel like myself throughout our engagement.

4. Our ceremony was filled with meaning. One of our best friends Shana, co-owner of Stems, was the reverend for our wedding.  The three of us shared histories, books, and creative thoughts while designing the ceremony and writing our vows.  The ceremony began by Shana lighting a candle surrounded by fresh shamrocks at the altar for those who had passed.  Next to it sat a beautiful red murano vase filled with delicate black beauty roses in honor of my fabulous uncle who has passed away.  Underneath it was a handkerchief embroidered by my maid of honor’s great grandmother in Italy, a favorite bridal shower gift from her mother to me.  After the kelly green aisle runner was pulled, the bagpipes began and the bridal party walked down the aisle lead by my sister dressed as my beautiful “something blue”.  The bagpipes made nearly everyone cry.  As my dad and I followed the bagpiper down the aisle, he turned to me and said how much he loved me.  Reaching the altar I saw that I wasn’t the only one crying as I saw looked into both Dan and Shana’s eyes.

5. I asked my Grandma Jean, who is my favorite lady in the world, to say something of her choice during our ceremony.  She said she’d keep it “under two minutes”, which she suggested for our other readers as well. J  She decided to write something for us and to keep it a surprise for the ceremony.  What she read was the most sincere and sweet telling of her personal experience in love, life and marriage to my grandpa Russ of over fifty years, which brought a tear to every dry eye including hers.  It was honest, real, and beautiful for everyone there to witness it and everyone commented on her grace and class.  She is beautiful in many ways, endlessly smart and insightful, loving, kind, funny, and patient…all traits that come in handy in life long marriage and I was moved beyond words by what she had to say.

6. Our ceremony wasn’t a religious one, but it was full of spirit and charm.  We wanted to honor our heritage and asked Dan’s sister Patti to read The Irish Blessing, “may the road rise to meet you...” which is such a complete sentiment and one which brought the warmth of tradition to the ceremony as well.  After Patti, my college photography professor, Peter Le Grand, who created a home away from home during my college years and after, read a short reading by EE Cummings.  This poem honored our modern lives, artistic selves, and eternal love for each other.

I thank You God for most this amazing day
for the leaping greenly spirits of trees
and a blue true dream of sky; and for everything
which is natural which is infinite which is yes

- EE Cummings

7.  Ahhh, number 7, of course has to be my horseshoe.  I asked my Grandpa who has been a wood worker by night to carve a horseshoe to hang from my bouquet.  He and my grandmother thoughtfully sought out a ferrier for a real horseshoe from an Arabian horse, one of my personal favorites.  He based his design on that along with our save the date imagery.  The ferrier warned him that the horseshoe must be hung pointed up to catch all of our good luck.  My grandpa carved “Nat - 777 - Dan” along its curve and I hung it from red ribbons from my bridal bouquet.  It was such a delicate and extraordinary gift of love and it will now hang above our front door. If we’re so lucky, it will be an heirloom for generations to come.

8. Our flowers were one of the most amazing additions to the day thanks to Allison Denny and the Stems crew.  Allison is an awesome designer, very dear friend and neighbor.  This was naturally a HUGE detail for me, and I know I was a lot to deal with in planning as a serious flower addict.  I wanted as much of everything I loved to be part of the day and she hit the mark perfectly.  The colors I chose were red, green, blue and yellow.  It was a unique palette, so rich and vibrant.  Each arrangement was different from the next with combinations of roses, dahlias, hydrangea, orchids, scabiosa, scented geranium, mosses, willow, fern, succulents, berries, and other amazing textural and colorful accents.  Various vintage inspired containers in wood, green glazed ceramic and footed glass were used to create the lush and timeless feel.

9. I was lucky to have my friends Robin Hann and her husband photograph the entire wedding beautifully along with our many multitalented and generous friends.  Photographer Doug McGoldrick took pictures of guests holding signs decorated with personal messages, both hysterical and touching, for our guestbook.  The handmade details and Irish theme continued into the cocktail hour as guests were served appetizers on colorful napkins stamped with shamrocks and W’s for Walsh.  The favor table was decorated with votives and lottery tickets wrapped with green, shamrock-stamped paper.

10. I now know what receiving lines are for, which we probably should have had, as I basically spent every second on the dance floor with all the other dancing queens! Justin Hori of Bento Entertainment, husband of my Maid of Honor, was our dj playing the hits.  As the night progressed, my dad took over the song requests and the microphone, lip-synching to every song which I joined in on. In my mind it was just like the wedding reception montage in Wedding Crashers. I wish I could live it over again every weekend for the rest of my life, however it is so much more special as it was only once.

There was so much love in the room that everyone could feel it.  It lifted us from our daily hustle and bustle existence to a place where everyone in our lives of all ages and relationships were at one time, in one room for one purpose, to honor our love and to be a part of our bond forever.  During the planning this was ironically the reason that having a wedding made me nervous, but looking back at it is the most rewarding and bittersweet feeling, that our day with everyone was truly once in a lifetime, and one that I hope we can help each other to remember all of for the rest of our lives.

Thank you so much, Natalie, for sharing your special day with us...this could be one of the most personal weddings I have ever seen. I feel so lucky to be able to share it with our readers!

The flowers were done by the oh-so-chic Stems, the photographer was Doug McGoldrick, the cake was by Vanille, the music by Bento Entertainment, the venue was The Tower Club.

Wedding Invitations by Abby Jean

So the invitation that was inspired by the gorgeous inspiration board that I posted earlier today is....

Jill_abby_jean_wedding_invitation

This particular invitation is from our Jill Collection...engraved white and slate ink on a sage green paper. What I loved about the wedding that we featured earlier today, is that it seems sweet but sophisticated, soft but substantial. I love the blend of tradition and the feeling of intimacy. That is just what I wanted this invitation suite to represent. To date, the Jill collection is one of our number one sellers.

An Inspired Affair...

It has been a couple of weeks since we've done a feature on our Inspired Affair series. And, since this inspiration board featuring photographs by Lisa Leigh, is one of my favorites within the Abby Jean album, I thought it was about time I shared it with you!

Inspiration_board_abby_jean

For those of you that aren't familiar with the Inspired Affair series...here's the rundown. The new Abby Jean albums are out in stores and now feature 12 different inspiration boards, each one inspiring a unique invitation suite. Check back in a little while to see what invitation suite this board inspired!

PS - I am also updating previous boards within the series to make sure you can see the invitation that it coordinates with!

Wedding Invitations by Cat Seto

Just when I thought that I had put the purple palette to rest, my dear friend Cat emailed me a photo of a new purple invitation from her wedding line. It's so lovely, I just had to share!

Purple_wedding_invitation_3

Although Cat's invitations are sold in stores nationwide, she also has one of the most wonderful little shops in the Russian Hill neighborhood of San Francisco. She is all talent and her shop reflects her gorgeous aesthetic to perfection. Cat is actually one of the first people that introduced me to Jessica Rust, so needless to say, her eye for talent is spot on. If you are lucky enough to live in the area, you should definitely stop by Cat Seto and pick up something special!

If not, you can check out Cat's new blog ShopFriends...which is filled with great finds from indie designers. Although the blog is brand new, it's already shaping up to be one of my must-reads.

Oh and if you haven't gotten your fill of purple from Style Me Pretty, Matthew Mead has some pretty amazing purple inspirations. It looks like Purple is THE color of the season!

Wedding Cakes by Bakery Bar

As I was working on our Portland Little Black Book, I stumbled across the most adorable cake company that I have seen in a while...Bakery Bar. Aside from their ridiculously cute holiday cakes, they also have some gorgeous wedding designs...
