Do-It-Yourself Wedding Projects

Check out this DIY Wedding Cake that one of our readers sent me! The entire cake cost less than $200 to make!

Tips on making the cake from the designer…

I preordered a plain double tier vanilla sponge cake complete with royal icing. With the specifications, I drafted the bouquet on paper and assembled the top at home. Put them all together on the wedding day on site. To add height to the cake, I placed the cake on top of a Ikea photo frame and placed river pebbles and vanilla scented candles all round for a nice warm effect. Two hummingbirds top the cake.

  1. I love the windmill placecards! I wish I had seen this before our wedding in August. SO cute.

  2. I love the windmills! that’s definitely making it into my google notebook to save for later. :) the paper she used was so beautiful.

  3. That brings up a great question…what solution are others using to track all of the great little ideas/photos/descriptions found all over the web? Google doc? Del.icio.us? iPhoto? I have been trying tons and they all just end up in my email. Abby, this could be a great post idea too!

  4. Hi Jennie, just saw your comment and wanted to let you know that Google now offers a notebook tool that I’ve been using. It’s fabulous.

You can collect everything there and have pictures and links all in one spot.

  5. You can always opt for a crystal wedding cake topper which will draw everyone’s attention to the cake.It should be elegant and unique so that you will feel a sense of pride when you reuse the wedding cake topper for your wedding anniversary.

  6. Thats amazing that one could have the patience to sit down and do all that :-)
I’d have to hire someone or pay magicalday.com to do it for me.

  7. Abby~
I have been hunting all over the internet in search of the instructions on how to make the windmills and here was a great example, under my nose the whole time! If there’s any way you can post the directions on how to make these, I would be forever indebted to you–I really want to use this idea as our save-the-date and the clock is ticking!
Thank you for your beautiful blog and these amazing DIY posts!!!!
