Calligraphy Wedding Cakes

*spoiler alert...if you haven't already read the new Martha Stewart, this is a feature from that mag!

I am officially in love. This season's Martha Stewart Weddings features some of the most over-the-top, gorgeous wedding cakes I have ever seen. Beyond gorgeous. Perfection. One part calligraphy, one part color and confection...basically a wedding invitation designer's dream come true...

Martha_stewart_wedding_cakes_3

photos were all taken by Anita Calero, written by Heidi Cho

The first cake, on the top right, is basically a series of intricate scrolls, made by the brilliant Wendy Kromer. I love, love, love the colors on this cake and the calligraphy is perfect for a vintage chic wedding. The second row, also by Kromer, is a series of motifs that to me, is sweet but sophisticated. I love the use of a few smaller cakes, rather than one large.

The third cake, by designer Denise Sharp, features pieces of poetry by Elizabeth Barret Browning...so pretty. As much as I love the pink cake, I really am obsessed with the monogrammed French patisserie-style cakes. How adorable are these little sponge cakes??

And finally, the most classic calligraphy cake...designed with the help of Michael Sull, calligrapher extraordinaire. Sheer beauty. Almost too pretty to eat! The last photo on the right shows paper cones stuffed with wrapped chocolates from Bell'occhio.

I am not big on "themes" but using calligraphy as a focal point in your decor is completely stunning. It just seems like such a romantic way to add personality and beauty, without seeming over the top or too styled. What do you guys think?

PS - This particular issue of Weddings just might be the best one yet. It is JAM packed with goodies. If you haven't already, definitely run out and buy it asap. And I swear, I am not just saying that because Abby Jean has an ad in it...it really is THAT good.

Wedding Invitations by Abby Jean

New photos are in! I just got the new images that have been taken of the Abby Jean wedding line and they are so cute, I had to share them with you. The photos were all taken by Rinne Allen...

Sophie_wedding_invitation

This first design is called Sophie. It is sweet but sophisticated, with a little vintage flair. This particular design is letterpressed with a faded black/brown ink, then uses the striped reception card to bring in a bit of color. Believe it or not, the silhouettes are actually replicas of those that my mom and her brother had done when they were kids. The cool thing about this particular invitation suite is that you can send us your own photographs and we will customize the silhouettes for you!

Courtney_wedding_invitation

Courtney is our classic. This design is one of our best sellers and honestly, every time it is printed, it just looks so gorgeous. Engraved on a deep chocolate brown paper using a pale, robin's egg blue ink, it's one part chic, one part traditional. This invitation is all about "old meets new." Courtney was named after one of my bridesmaids and has probably received the most attention out of our original bunch. Niki Taylor used these invitations and they were then featured in US Weekly...how cool is that?

Emily_wedding_invitation

Emily is a great invitation to use if you are having a traditional wedding...with a twist. Engraved on soft white paper with chocolate brown ink, it's more reminiscent of a classic engraved invitation. But, with the chocolate brown reception card and the hint of pink (not shown) ink on the response card, it's been updated to reflect a more modern bride.

Maggie_wedding_invitation

Maggie is one of my all time favorite designs. Named after one of my dearest friends, who I have always considered to be so elegant and yet so approachable, Maggie is our interpretation of a simple, but stunning wedding invitation. This design actually uses foil and engraving to create a two tone effect. Love, love, love this one. It's tradition with a bit of bling.

Abigail_wedding_invitation

Abigail is all about fun. It's engraved using white ink on kelly green paper which produces an amazingly sharp result. This one truly pops. It's a little bit preppy, a little bit old school...all infused with a bit of personality which I love. This monogram can be completely customized so that it perfectly represents you. It's our newest look and the green paper is being eaten up by brides.

The best part about our invitations is that they are completely customizable. If you love the Abigail monogram, but want to print it in berry colored ink, on the chocolate brown paper from the Courtney line, it's no problem! We want your invitation to reflect you as a couple, and we want it to be the perfect introduction to your perfect day. If you have any questions about where you can see the line, just shoot me a quick email (abby at abbyjeanpress dot com). We have added a bunch of stores lately, so our website is currently being updated.

Wedding Jewelry by Saylor Sage

I can't stop staring at that gorgeous necklace, by Saylor Sage, featured on yesterday's board. I spent the morning just pouring over her website and I can't believe that I haven't maxed out my credit card already buying up all of her amazing designs...

Saylor_sage

The necklaces range from $48 to nearly $600 (with most falling in the $128 range). Perfect for your maid of honor gift. Also, check out the "what's new" section...some seriously great clutches and bangles.

Inspired Weddings

Can one color, one photo, one cake... inspire an entire affair? When I saw this cake designed by Lark Cake Shop, I was totally convinced.

Bird_cage_cake_3_2

I am in love with this cake. One part whimsy, one part beauty. Although it isn't a traditional wedding cake, it seems sophisticated and elegant enough to hold its own at a any wedding. So for me, the answer is yes. A color, a photo, a cake....all can inspire your entire affair.

Here is my wedding board, inspired by the above Lark Cake Shop creation...

Birdcage2

Top flowers by Rebecca Thuss, Gold invitation by Ceci NY, Necklace by Saylor Sage, Flowers photo on bottom by Megan Sorel, Gold bracelets by Rebecca Norman. All other photos taken by Elizabeth Messina.

What do you think? My goal was to allow the cake to inspire the wedding...not to match it identically. The golds, deep pinks and cream hues...with a faint touch of teal blue, gave way to what I believe would be a stunningly sophisticated color palette. The gold lattice work on the cake was translated thru the patterning on the invitations and the ornate, though gorgeous jewelry. I softened the look up a bit and brought in an old world charm with the ruffled gown and the traditional roses.

Inpsiration Board: A Backyard Bash

This inspiration board was designed by one of our readers, Sherri, for her little sister Annie...appropriately titled "Annie's Delightfully Charming Backyard Bash."

Sherri

Color theme: Grass Green and Sunshine Yellow / Invitation: Hanalei by Kenzie Kate / Centerpieces: Featuring several small vases, each with a lush bunch of a single type of flower. The frame would include a photo of Annie's beloved pug and the table number. (by Nancy Liu Chin Designs, San Francisco) / Bridesmaid dresses: Cotton dresses in grass green by Banana Republic (image from theknot gallery) / Cakes: Playfully designed cakes in the image of the bride and groom. (photo by Rob and Lauren Photography) / Details: photos by various photographers, including Becker, Jessica Claire, Laurence Kim, Henry Chan, and Tony Yang

The best part about this gorgeous wedding board, is that the entire affair can be pulled off even if you are on a really tight budget. Here are some of Sherry's cost saving tips for this particular wedding...

-No venue fee. The backyard is free!

- Hold the ceremony under some tree branches. No other ceremony decor is needed. As you can see in the center photo, nature is all you need for a beautiful setting.

- Take advantage of the features in your house. Get ready in the room you grew up in. Guests can use the bathrooms in the house (no port-o-potties). Caterers can use the kitchen. Use the patio or deck as the dance floor.

- Buy a knee length white dress off the rack. It's playful and flirty, and will cost much much less than a designated "wedding dress."

- The use of color can be a great way to have a visually appealing wedding for less. The burst of yellow in this wedding can be seen in the bouquet ribbon, the groom's tie, the bridesmaid's bouquets, and the escort cards. None of these details need to be fancy or expensive, but the sunny yellow color will tie everything together and enhance the photos.

- For the getaway vehicle, ride bikes decorated with yellow ribbon and the signs "Just" and "Married" on the back of the seats. So fun and playful!

- Use flowers that cost less. The centerpieces in the photo actually use carnations, which are cheap but can be beautiful if featured in the right way.

- Save money on alcohol by buying in bulk from stores like Costco. Unused bottles can be returned for a full refund.

- String lights are cheap but serve as both lighting and decor.

If I had a backyard that was this beautiful, I wouldn't have to think twice about where to host the wedding. Thanks so much, Sherry! This is really beautiful!

Wedding Invitations by Lily Darby

The girls over at Lily Darby emailed me this morning to let me know about their newest line of invitations...when I saw their work, I went nuts over it! So incredibly chic. Innovative. Completely unique. I love when up and coming, small businesses start making waves and setting new standards for design and Lily Darby is doing just that. How great are these invitations...

Lily_darb

This suite was designed for a couple being married in a historic, New England yarn and ribbon mill. They wanted each piece to be a keepsake of sorts for their guests.

Lily_darb2

This invitation was created for a couple who was inspired by art and the uniqueness of a simple silhouette. I love how they infused a classic look with such a modern aesthetic.

Lily_darb3

For this wedding, antique milk bottle caps were used to add charm to a simple, vintage inspired invitation suite. The caps helped to show the personality of the farm where the wedding was being held.

Definitely spend a few minutes today, checking out the Lily Darby site. It is filled with gorgeous invitations that just might inspire your own wedding style. And, they were recently featured in InStyle Weddings as a hip, new designer...pretty huge! Thanks so much Alyssa for emailing me!

Event Design by Hatch Creative

I love this event done by Hatch Creative Studio in NY. The soft greens, the tea lights in mason jars, the creamy white flowers and the miniature magnifying glasses...every detail is so pretty and delicate. This is the perfect look for a Sunday wedding or a really intimate family affair.

Hatch

Although I don't know Hatch's specific resources for the items featured above, I did find my own interpretation of the pieces...

You can find really similar bowls, white chopsticks and square chargers at Pearl River. The mason jars in various sizes at Container and Packaging. The tea lights can be bought in bulk at the Discount Candle Shop. And the cute magnifying glass favors can be found at Oriental Trading.

I love how easy and inexpensive this whole look is...when you are trying to save money, buy in bulk. A lot of one item (in this case, mason jars with tea lights) can make a huge impact.

Wedding Dress Donation

Before we begin today's post, I wanted to let everyone know about the wedding dress donation event that Brides Magazine and Good Morning America are teaming up for. Here is the press release from the editors...

"Calling all former brides! On October 4th, you can appear live on Good Morning America AND help support Breast Cancer Awareness. BRIDES magazine is teaming up with Good Morning America to kick-off a national Breast cancer fund-raising campaign that features donated wedding gowns. If you'd like To give your dress to the cause, email donatemydress@bridesmag.com by September 29th for more detail"

Or, if you aren't quite to the donation phase yet (read, it's hard to donate a dress that hasn't been worn yet OR perhaps you still put the gown on here and there, reliving your glory days) not to fret, there are other opportunities for you if you live in the NY area...

"BRIDES magazine is delighted to be supporting this wonderful cause, many organizations support important, needy research,  but making Memories grants wishes to terminally ill patients so that, for example, a mother might have access to  a video camera to leave a memory of herself for her young children is heartwarming to assist.

We have mobilized the bridal, fashion, style and décor community to host our national awareness campaign celebration and 3 day sample sale, from October 3-6.

We need lots of energetic, enthusiastic hands to help on those dates and over the next 2 weeks as we countdown to the big event. Between September 19 and September 29 we are looking for extra hands to process wedding gown contributions and pack goodie bags for guests.

Oct 1 & 2 we need help coordinating final elements. Oct 3,  we need help for checking in guests and distributing goodie bags at the kick off event, 5-10 p.m. October 4, 5, 6 we need help with staffing the sample sale.

The event is located at 122 W. 26th Street in New York. Ideally we need a commitment of 1/2 day or full day time slots.

Please write to: volunteers4somethingpink@gmail.com to inquire about volunteering.

We look forward to working with you, The editors of BRIDES magazine."

We'll have our regular post a bit later in the day!

Martha Stewart Weddings

Yesterday could have possibly been the greatest day that I have ever had. Well okay, my wedding was the greatest day. Yesterday was a pretty close second. Style Me Pretty, along with four other wonderful blogs, was featured by Martha Stewart on her morning show. Yep, it's true. She opened the show with a little segment on blogs, then mentioned a few of us in the audience, mine included! It was SUCH an honor and to be honest, I don't think that a single producer there knew that I wasn't completely over the moon. I had a hard time keeping the silly, little girl grin off my face, I clapped a little too loudly and I jumped up to lead the standing ovation when Martha walked out. Well at least that is what I was doing in my head:)

Anyway, to thank her, I thought that I would do a post on her 10th anniversary issue, published in 2005 which was briefly shown on yesterday's show. Here are her top ten favorite wedding stories...

Ms_10b

The Top Row: The first photo is a suite of wedding stationery which Martha believes makes the details of your wedding more memorable and personal. The second photo is a green bouquet, mixing viburnum with Queen Anne's lace. The third photo is a tower of roses cake from 1998.

The Second Row: The first photo is a unique arrangement from 2000 which pairs mauve and citrus green, alternating sizes to take advantage of a long table. The second is a wreath made of fresh flowers, this one using freesia, dahlias and roses. Perfect for a "just married" car. The third photo was created using 150 hybrid tea roses and was formed into a heart shape. So pretty. The fourth picture is a group of details that incorporate a distinct theme...in this case, daisies.

The Bottom Row: Of course, the gorgeous tower of cupcakes that was featured in the 2003 issue and has become so popular. The second photo is a winter white candy bar, featured in 2001. The third photo are "dragees all dressed up." Perfect ways to make a classic wedding treat, so unique.

So, thank you Martha, for featuring Style Me Pretty on your show. It was an incredible experience that I will not forget. And to readers, if you ever have an opportunity to make a NY trip and visit the Martha Stewart Show, you are in for such a treat. The set is gorgeous, Martha is captivating and watching the show unfold is a true experience.

The other blogs that were featured, which you absolutely have to check out if you haven't already are the Hostess Blog, Pink of Perfection, Smitten Kitchen and Wednesday Chef.

Wedding Photography by Elizabeth Messina

ng PhotoThe lovely and oh-so-talented photographer, Elizabeth Messina, has been gracious enough to share a few more of her favorite weddings with me. I absolutely love this one...such sweet sophistication with a natural elegance and style. A look that I know so many of you are after...

Wedding_3_3

I have fallen madly in love with the fluffy pink peonies paired with that gorgeous lace dress. The colors and textures make the affair seem completely romantic, which of course, is just what a wedding should be.

Wedding Jewelry by Abaloria

How gorgeous are these pieces from Abaloria, an oh-so-chic designer out of Seattle...

Aboloria

You can shop online and choose from a gorgeous selection of handmade pieces, or if you are lucky enough to live in the Seattle area, you can pop into her studio for a visit and create your own custom piece. Her prices are insanely reasonable (from $50 for a pair of earrings) for something that she handcrafts and would make for the PERFECT bridesmaid gift. The necklaces and bracelets are a little pricier though would be a lovely treat for yourself!

Day Off Calling...

I am heading to Dallas for a couple of days to shower my BFF, whose getting married in November, with wedding attention so I won't be doing a new post today. But, since I didn't want to leave you empty handed, I thought that I would post this adorable inspiration board that I received from one of our readers, Martha.

From Martha...

This one I call  "Wedding Swirls".  I came across this photo of a spiral lawn and thought what a fun idea to use for a wedding. I took the spiral shape (or swirl) and used it as a theme for a wedding. In every picture there is a spiral...antique metal urns, the roses, a Dior dress that encircles the body, Valentino shoes ( look closely at the heel), stone garden ornament, insect pins on ferns, cake with icing swirled on the side, and the braid coiled into a bun for a bride.

Color Palette of Reds...

When I was a kid, red was my very favorite color. I think someone once told me that if your favorite color was red, you were a naturally fiery person. And, I really wanted to be a fiery person. My favorite color, now, is pink. I wonder what that says about me.

Anyway, today I am loving this fiery, red color palette...it seems festive and alive to me. Like a really fun party...

Red

And speaking of red, a few weeks ago, I was a bridesmaid in my dear friend, Anne's, wedding...whose color palette was red. Pink and red. Here are a few pictures from her absolutely adorable affair...I will post the entire wedding when we get the pictures back.

Dear Abby...

Today is Q & A day...I have received a ton of emails over the last few weeks with some really great questions that every couple seems to face. Here are a few that I thought we could tackle together. I would love to hear your thoughts and comments, then I will post my own answers later in the day. There is no right or wrong way to approach the answers...it is just great to hear from our huge variety of readers.

Question 1: I'm having a tough time coming up with a color palette for our wedding that feels right. The dilemma is that we recently had to find a new venue after learning that our old venue had been double booked. This proved really difficult, and though our new space is very nice, it wasn't really what I had originally been envisioning. I loved our last venue, and had a palette I really loved. But, the old palette just doesn't feel right in the new space.

The colors inside our new venue are warmer and stronger (particularly with dark green and royal purple velvet curtains in the theater).

I'd love to stick with the black and white look (possibly doing ivory or cream or something, instead of white -- although I have a ton of white vintage milkglass bowls and vases I bought before we learned of the venue problem, and I fully intend to still use them for the flower arrangements at the wedding). But I'm trying to figure out what other colors I should use. I've started to think about a palette similar to this one, but am not 100% sold on how it will feel in the space

To give you a sense of what I like: Blue is my favorite color. I also like pinks (any shade), and greens (with a preference to either bright emerald-like greens or soft greens). I tend to not like reds, yellows, oranges and browns. I prefer silver to gold. I typically am drawn more to softer colors. I want something that feels "vintagey" (particularly something that fits with an art deco or art nouveau theme), and very timeless. I'd prefer to stay away from really trendy combinations that I'll hate 20 years from now, when looking back at my wedding album.

Answer 1: First of all, it stinks that you had to change venues when your heart was set on the first...with that said, sometimes it works out in your favor. This new venue is SO cool. I love the different areas and honestly think that there are many different palettes that will work in here. My favorite, however is this...all different shades of cream and white (linens, flowers, etc), with your bridesmaids and groomsmen in chic black attire (along with the rest of the men). I looooove the white on white effect. It is classic and sophisticated. Bring in vintage champagne saucers, creamy flowers in white milk glass vases and perhaps even mismatched cream colored linens to create an old world effect. Tons of candles...everywhere. And outside, either japanese lanterns or panels of wispy white fabric kind of blowing in the breeze. This black and whites (note the plural) seems to really suit a somewhat vintage theater feel. If you really want to bring in a color, I suggest a soft coral, a muted jade color or a deeper aqua. I don't think that pastels will hold their own against the jewel tones in the space. Overall though, I think that the new venue is fabulous and you have a lot to work with.

I just saw the poster that Katherine posted in the comments section...SPOT ON. I think this is perfect for this space. I wonder if you'd be able to get a bunch of these and put them on the walls to create the ambiance?

Question 2. I love your blog and would love to see something about creative ceremonies:  different formats, types of readings, new things to try.  I'm planning my own on 9/29 and lacking the creative juice but wanting something different. Any suggestions?

Answer 2: Like a few of the comments said, there are so many fun ways to personalize your ceremony. I had my cousin read a poem that my aunt wrote (she passed away and it was the perfect way to bring her into the ceremony), then had a close friend sing the Irish Blessing. My family is Irish so it meant a lot to the guests as well. My dear friend, Amanda, brought in a folk singer for her wedding who sang a beautiful ballad for the couple, using just a guitar as back-up...it was so touching and memorable. Perhaps your father or mother, or a close family friend, could tell a funny story about you guys, rather than doing a formal reading. Or, you can ask the minister to "insert" a cute, unexpected phrase into your vow...something like "I, (Bride/Groom), take you (Groom/Bride), to be my (wife/husband), to have and to hold from this day forward, for better or for worse, for richer, for poorer, in sickness and in health, to love and to cherish, to laugh wholeheartedly with and to respectfully disagree with; from this day forward until death do us part." Honestly, there are so many ways. I suggest that you sit down and really think about the two of you as a couple. Let that define how you infuse personality into your ceremony.

Question 3. My fiance and I are trying to come up with cool, unique gifts for his two groomsmen.  Nothing monogramed or related to golf or beer steins or anything like that.....all of the idea out there seem to be one of those things!!  I told him I'd check the few wedding blogs I read for some ideas but it seems there are lots of great ideas for bridesmaids and absolutely nothing out there about groomsmen!  I'm thinking I might get my bridemaids a necklace from smallthings design and maybe a few other little things from anthropologie, but we just can't come up with anything perfect for the groomsmen.  Have you heard of any good ideas, or come across any while preparing your blog?

I love the ideas that the readers posted about giving each guy a separate gift. Love, love, love the idea of giving a silk "thanks for helping us tie the knot" tie. I also love the idea of giving them something that they can really use...great tickets to a sporting event, a gift certificate to a good restaurant in their city, membership to a beer/wine of the month group, a gift certificate to an airline so that they can come visit the two of you (if they are out of state). If you do a gift certificate, presentation is key. And, make sure that the gift actually reflects the person who is receiving it...you don't want to give Sox tickets to a Yankee fan!

Fall Wedding Color Palette

It's cool and rainy here in Boston...the first sign that Fall is here! Although I am a Texas girl at heart and love lazy days in the sun, there is just something so warm and cozy about the first month of Fall. When I saw this beautiful wedding, shot by Elizabeth Messina (who by the way, has the most incredible photographs on her site), it just made me so inspired for this wedding season...

Autumn

How beautiful is this palette of reds? It's romantic, it's sophisticated and yet it's really inviting. I am going to do a little looking around and see if I can find the sources for some of the producs in these gorgeous shots. Check back a little later today!

Reception Centerpieces

Last week, when we were oooo-ing and ahhhhh-ing over Avalon's gorgeous wedding, someone commented on where to find inexpensive, but pretty vases. So, when I stumbled upon this feature in the Fall 2005 issue of Martha Stewart weddings, I knew that had to put it up. The article talks about clustered centerpieces and is filled with beautiful ideas on inexpensive floral arrangements, along with some great resources on lovely vases...

Centerpieces

The top photos are clusters of wooden bowls, all of which can be found either at Pearl River (large and medium) or Crate and Barrel.

The second row, left photo, shows various shapes and sizes of round white vases, all from Pearl River or Black Bamboo. The photo on the right, which I LOVE, features bowls of floating dahlias and hydrangea florets. So romantic and elegant. The bowls were found at Crate and Barrel.

The great fabric wrapped vases in the bottom left are such a chic way of adding pattern to your tablescape. The vases were purchased from Planter Resource and the fabric was found at Classic Revivals and Galbraith & Paul.

The photo on the bottom left is a great look at the wide variety of containers you can use to create a clustered centerpiece. The white ceramic vases are from KleinReid. The bright green vases are from Global Table. The tall, white ceramic vases were purchased at Room & Board AND Tozai Home. The cute little glazed planters are from Jamali Garden Supplies. Tea vases are flea market finds. Glass bowls and vases from Crate and Barrel and Aero. The Mint Julep Cups are from Jamali Garden Supplies.

Far and away the BEST resource that is listed above for inexpensive, but really beautiful vases is Jamalie Garden Supplies. Spend some time browsing the various categories and you will most definitely find the perfect centerpiece container.

Real Wedding: Keren & Corey

I am really excited about today's post! Keren and Corey Springer, of Wud Furniture, have offered to share some jaw droppingly beautiful photos from their recent wedding. Since they are designers, and brilliant ones at that, I knew their wedding would be spectacular. And, I was right!

Keren

I've asked Keren to share with us the ten things that made their wedding day truly special...

1. Having our worlds collide - It was so special to be surrounded by all of our close family and friends.
2. After a decade of dating Corey, it felt so good to finally say our vows and make the ultimate commitment.
3. Looking around the room once the party started and seeing the burst of color from the flowers that we chose - fuschia, lime green and orange. It just made me smile.
4. The energy on the dance floor.
5. The freshly baked chocolate chip cookies and shot glasses of milk that were passed around on the dance floor.
6. The traditional jewish ketubah ceremony where we were "officially" married by our rabbi.
7. Our first dance - I do not think I will ever forget how happy I was at that moment. We chose "dixie chicken" by little feat, which was upbeat, different, and a song we both loved when we were dating as counselors at summer camp.
8. The speeches by our family members - priceless.
9. Slipping into ballet flats after the ceremony.
10. And last but certainly not least, the moment Corey and I saw each other for the first time on our wedding day.

I love this wedding. It seems so personal and intimate and yet, vibrant and exciting. Thank you so much, Keren for sharing your perfect day with us. And for the readers, if you haven't already, check out Keren and Corey's company Wud Furniture...stunning work.

Wedding Invitations by Demby & Solomon

My friend Lysa, over at Demby & Solomon, emailed me a few pictures of her latest custom wedding invitations. They are so gorgeous, I just had to share them with you...

Demby2

Most of her work is letterpressed, though because she is a custom studio, she can really work with whatever printing method the design calls for. Lysa also offers all of the bells and whistles including calligraphy, hand-lined envelopes, custom-designed photostamps and address embossers (to name a few). Lysa is an incredible designer and really goes out of her way to make sure that you are more than happy with your wedding stationery. After all, it's a pretty important piece of paper!! More of Lysa's work can be seen here.

Eco-Chic Weddings

Emily Anderson, author of the book Eco-Chic Weddings (and now of her new blog), has been sweet enough to share with us her own inspiration board for an environmentally sound affair, without sacricing beauty or style. To see her breakdown of ideas and resources, check out her article for our new wedding guide.

Wedding Cost Cutting Tips

First and foremost, I hope everyone had a nice, lazy weekend! If you haven't already, I would LOVE for you to email me (abby@abbyjeanpress) your info (name/closest city/age) for my upcoming "little black book." Not to worry, all information will remain completely confidential. Secondly, I wanted to let you know that I have posted the Winners of the Inspiration Board Contest. Thanks again to everyone!

During our Inspiration Board contest, I fell in love with Avalon's board...the colors, the styles, everything. It seemed to me to be the perfect board, so I was curious to know how her actual wedding translated. Brace yourselves people, this is going to be good.

Here are some photos from her recent wedding...

Avalon_wedding

(photos by Amy Schubert)

Now here is the real kicker...Avalon and her fiance had this beautiful affair for under 20k. Yep, you heard me right. They managed to design a magazine-worthy wedding for under twenty thousand dollars. The average wedding in America costs roughly $30,000. And let's face it, the average wedding in America...looks nothing like this!!

So, Avalon has been kind enough to share with us some of her cost saving tips, for an oh-so-chic wedding:

1.  Prioritize. When you don’t have a huge budget, it’s essential to focus on a few excellent ideas you can execute well than to try to accomplish too much and spread yourself thin. I would caution you to really think twice about buying an expensive dress if you are having a lower budget wedding. Everyone will think you look beautiful on your wedding day no matter what, and there may be areas where an extra thousand dollars will make a bigger difference.

2.  Be flexible. Although it wouldn’t have been our first choice, a Friday morning wedding gave us a lot of leverage with vendors who would have otherwise declined to work within our relatively small budget. We ended up loving our intimate brunch and now we can’t imagine having done it any other way.

3.  Pick a low-cost venue.  Look at parks, museums, and other lower cost alternatives. These sites can also cut down on the amount of decorations you need by providing dramatic (and free) backdrops.

4.  Choose vendors carefully. In most cases, we couldn’t afford the vendors whose portfolios we loved. Instead, we chose those we could talk to and showed them a lot of pictures we liked. It took some micro managing, but we ended up with great results for a fraction of the cost.

5.  Do it yourself. Make as much as you can yourselves, but only if it will save money AND look good.

6.  Don’t over-do-it-yourself. DIY has its advantages, but too many projects will just make you feel stressed out and weary. We only did what we felt we could pull off expertly. A homemade feel can be charming, but if projects look too unfinished, it may be better not to do them at all.

7.  Buy it yourself when possible. We were able to buy our own alcohol, which definitely saved money. We also bought a lot of décor items, like vases, trays, and frames, which we now use in our home. Our vases cost less than the cheapest options our florist gave us and we got to shop around for styles we loved.

8.  Splurge selectively. It’s counterintuitive, but spending extra on a few key areas will focus people’s attention and they probably won’t notice other things are missing. Having an espresso bar wasn’t necessary, but definitely made our brunch seem more special. We decided letterpress invitations would be an awesome way to set the tone for our wedding, even though they cost more.

9.  It’s all in the details. I think this is the most important tip. It doesn’t have to be expensive. Repeating your color scheme and various themes with some subtlety is key for a pulled together look. We used stamps to repeat the birds and leaves motif from our invitations on the escort cards, guest book, and table numbers. We couldn’t afford to make welcome baskets, so instead we made packets of information on our home computer in coordinating colors and distributed them with locally made chocolates.

10.  Don’t forget it’s a party. It should be fun, and most of all, it should reflect the two of you. Getting wrapped up in the “once in a lifetime” way of thinking makes it easy to overspend. Try to remember that the event is a celebration of your love and not a competition. I guarantee you won’t even care if things don’t go exactly as planned when it is all said and done.

New Look!

update...And the WINNER of the Inspiration Board is Kelly's Vintage Inspired Glam board. Congrats, Kelly!! I have also picked an SMP winner. I think that you all can guess by now, that Avalon has taken the cake, in my book. That is not to say that I don't have a ton of other favorites. Thanks to everyone that participated. The boards exceeded my expectations in so many ways, and I am forever grateful to have such wonderful and inspired readers.

Since today is officially a holiday, and I am feeling like soaking every last drop of this weather up, I am going to quickly tell you about some site updates, rather than writing a formal post. As you can probably tell, the site had a little bit of a make-over...and I am loving it! Here are some highlights...

-We now have a section devoted completely to Inspiration Boards (or click on the inspiration board to the left). I have chosen my favorite boards and have asked each of the designers to tell us a little bit more about the wedding that they are envisioning, along with a list of sources as to where we can get some of the great finds that they featured on their board. This section will continue to change so that you can have a behind the scenes look at some of the prettiest inspiration boards.

-I have also added an "Abby Loves" section...my five favorite posts over the past seven months. Sometimes, it is simply too difficult to sift through everything, so I have done the dirty work for you. I hope you enjoy this look back at some of SMP's shining moments!

-You also might notice that the categories are now at the top of the page. Actually, they are at the top and on the side. Those along the top, are the most read categories...easy access to your favorite topics. All of the categories however, can still be found towards the bottom of the left side panel.

I have a few more changes coming up in the near future...but I need YOUR help. I am in the process of creating a little black book of sorts...an edited list of chic, oh-so stylish vendors in your area. But, I want to make sure that I cover those areas that our readers are actually in. So, if you could send a quick email to abby@abbyjeanpress.com with the following information (you can cut/paste), good things will come your way! I promise!

First Name or Screen Name
Age
Closest Metropolitan Area
Wedding Date

If you aren't getting married, you can just skip number 4! Thanks so much everyone and have a great holiday! XOXO

PS - We will be announcing the TWO Inspiration Board winners later today...the audience chosen and the SMP chosen:)
