The story takes place at the Argentia Naval Base in 1945. An American serviceman from the base had been engaged to a girl from a Conception Bay community. One particular man from the same community who was working with the Placentia man on the “grub truck” was “pretty sore” at the idea that he had not received an invitation to the wedding.

The night before the wedding, while delivering the cake to the reception hall, the man decided that since he was not invited to the wedding he should at least have some cake. All four men aboard the truck were in agreement with the idea and so two stood against the cab so that the driver could not see what was taking place. They removed the cake from the box, turned it upside-down, and with a spoon they scooped the bottom out of it, being very careful not to make it noticeable. With this done they placed the cake back into the box, touched up the icing a little and delivered it. Needless to say, there was an upset at that wedding.

“We never heard a word about it after,” commented the Placentia man.

Too pretty to eat! And while I do like things a bit more country, I think they’re totally over the top romantic.
One quick note: brides looking for calligraphic illustrations should have a look at the ornaments included in one of the Zaner type packages — birds, swashes and feathers similar to the cake at bottom left can be found there.
