Old Meets New

Today’s inspiration board was actually created by a Style Me Pretty reader! Here are the gorgeous ideas that she has come up with for her own wedding…

Avalon

This reader’s wedding is to be held in Berkeley, California inside a regional park filled with massive redwood trees. She is having a Friday morning ceremony then a brunch following, with about 100 guests. So far, her biggest challenges have been figuring out how to host a party of this magnitude while still staying true to who she and her fiance are as individuals and as a couple.

With that said, she has found her inspiration in non-wedding elements, like clothing, architecture and interior design…which has really helped to make the whole event seem to be an extension of their lives, rather than something that feels separate and impersonal.

I love the infusion of colors and textures that the board shows…somewhat of a rustic, but contemporary feel. Old meets new. I think that this bride should really run with that. Here are some of my own ideas for this already beautiful, August wedding…

-This seems like the perfect setting to write your own vows…or if that is too daunting of a task, perhaps just bring in personal letters that you read aloud to each other. I love when a couple shares a bit of who they are in the actual ceremony.

-Having a polaroid camera for your guests to take pictures of themselves, then place into an album with words of wisdom would be perfect here. Plus it is something that you can always have on your coffee table for friends and family to chat about.

-Since you are getting married among the trees, it would be nice if the favors reflected that same feeling…these braided trays would be the perfect container for a packet of seeds or a plant-a-tree pouch.

-I LOOOOVE the bird’s nest arrangement that Mimosa florist has on her site. These little gems are perfect for an outdoor rustic/chic wedding.

-I think that although the bride should stay traditional, it would be great to bring in a vintage element to the bridesmaids. These filagree headbands are so cute, and would be a great touch to the bridal party attire.

-It would be great to mix and match china…use a variety of thumbprint glasses paired with simple, gold accented plates.

Do you have other ideas for this reader? I would love to get the comments section going and what a great way to start!

I envision faux bois paper and textiles paired with woodland birds (cake, flowers, decorative accents). Very chic but also casually elegant.

  2. Those nest flower arrangements are so incredible. How could one put together something like that, you think?

Another beautiful inspiration board! I think a beautiful arbor intertwined with natural greenery would be a beautiful backdrop to the alter.

Although it may be cooler among the redwoods in August, you might also consider an arbor to place the wedding cake under for shade, it will also serve as a beautiful focal point for the reception.

I love the Polaroid idea too. Another idea is to use the beautiful backdrop of the redwoods and have a photographer take professional photos of each couple that they can keep as favors and to remember the wedding.

Every time I look at this board, I end up stuck on that picnic photo - I can't help but imagine accent tables (guestbook, gift, cake, whatever) piled with natural finds -- honeycomb, birds' nests, fruit still on the branch to be plucked (grapes, etc. could be an easy version, but other local & seasonal options certainly exist), geodes, moss & stone gardens, acorns & pine cones, etc. -- kind of a natural wunderkammer. This kind of spread would look amazing with family photos nestled in, waiting to be discovered!

Additionally, while you likely won't need parasols under the redwood canopy, if you have valet parking, you could certainly offer a parasol escort to the ceremony location. Offering old-timey games to your guests while you and your fiance are being photographed could add an almost Victorian woodlands nuance to your event, wrought iron bar puzzles, badminton birdies & rackets, paddle balls, and pinwheels, maybe?

A lovely favor would be tree saplings from the Arbor Foundation, or a donation to offset your guests' emissions (done by planting trees).

The natural theme could also go a bit more unusual, by placing lawn or other furniture in out-of-the-way nooks around the location, by particularly nice views, or nestled into the roots of particularly large trees -- it would be amazing to make that majestic & arboreal landscape personal with little details like that.

I imagine the meal being served around old farmhouse-style tables, with brightly colored chair cushions or linens enlivening the feel, maybe just runners or tablecloths to leave some of the warm wood visible.
